Cat Urinating on Carpet

Our 8 year-old cat is urinating on my dining room carpet. We moved into a new house last July, but I only noticed the urine spots a few months ago. We clean the area with a carpet cleaner, and the spray it with a "no-go" solution, but she keeps going. We have another cat that is about 6, but she is no problem. The cats have lived together for 6 years, so I am puzzled as to why the older cat is doing this.

Any suggestions on keeping her from peeing on the carpet, or as to why she is doing this? What should I do to clean it? Last thing I want is for my new house to smell like cat pee!!

We don't find any poop around, so she must be using the kitty box for that. Hard to tell if she is also peeing in there since we do have a second cat who uses it.

When I moved, one of my cats started peeing in my living room and on my bed!! We got her checked out for a UTI and it was negative. We finally got it under control, here's what I did:

1. Cleaned the area using OdoBan. It's the only thing I've found that totally gets rid of the smell. You can get it at Sam's club.

2. There's a litter called "Cat Attract" and it's for cats who have a problem using the litter box. The litter has a special scent that "attracts" the cat. It also is a very good size. You can find it at PetSmart. I love the litter, it clumps very nicely. You just can't use anything that would change the scent, so you should clean it every day or every other day. The litter comes with a booklet inside with tips on how to help cats to "think inside the box." It's about $13.99 a bag.

3. I started giving my cat Rescue Remedy, it's a natural antidepressent (bach flower essence) that's approved for pets. I put 3 drops on her food every day. It helped her relax in her new setting. I did it for about a month (she stopped peeing almost right away with the new litter and the Rescue Remedy) then I weaned her off (every other day, then every 3 days). You can find it at health food stores for about $8.99 a bottle, and the bottle lasts quite a long time.

4. I did spray the area with No Mark and I tried Feliway (a cat pheremone that relaxes the cat) but Feliway is very expensive. It works, but I found the new litter and the Rescue Remedy worked just as well and they are cheaper!

Anyway, we've been pee-free for a long time! I still use the Cat Attract litter but no Rescue Remedy. If there is an upset in our family i put her back on the Rescue Remedy for a short period of time, she's just a sensitive cat.

Good Luck!

We had the same problem. A few of the thousand things we tried, some from the vet, others from online cat sites: cotton balls soaked in vanilla around the area, citrus peels around the area, tin foil covering the area (weighted down so it wouldn't move), tape on the area (sticky side up),additional litter boxes, cleaning them more often, anti-anxiety behavioral medication. We couldn't figure out why he was doing it, but we thought it might be because of other cats he was seeing out the window that would come up to the house.
As for cleaning, get a black light so you can find the urine easily, and then you have to soak the carpet all the way down to the subfloor. We used Nature's Miracle most of the time. Don't use anything with ammonia because the cats think it's their urine and will go wherever they smell it. We had our carpets cleaned multiple times, but they never lost the smell, sorry to tell you. The only way we got rid of it was to take up the carpet, paint the subfloor with Kilz (primer) in several coats, and get new carpet. We didn't replace anything until we were sure the cat had stopped. Good luck!

There could be 2 different reasons.

1) there is a smell your cat doesn't like and she is spraying to mark it hers.

or

2) she could have an infection and it would be a good idea to have your cat checked out.

There's usually only a few reasons a cat will not use their litterbox:
*it's too dirty for them (if it's stinky to you, imagine what it's like to them, not to mention they have to walk around in it)
*it's a behavioral issue
*It's a medical issue

It's most likely your best bet to take the cat to the vet to have it tested to see if it has a UTI, it may not be able to hold it and that's why it's peeing on the carpet, and now that it's peed there so many times, it figues it can keep going there...you need to do more then deep/steam clean an area...you need to bleach it to take the scent away...use a VERY diluted solution of bleach water...test it on something you wouldn't care if it got ruined first, then once it's diluter enough that you won't ruin your carpeting use it in a spray bottle and spray the area...blot it up right away and continue a couple times to to get the entire scent away.

Generally this is a sign of a urinary tract infection. Take her to the vet and make sure that is not the problem. If it is not the problem maybe the vet can suggest something.

Our cat was using a potted plant to pee in and the cause was a UTI.
