Hello, I have developed a serious allergy to my cat in the past few years. She is a beautiful long haried domestic that I rescued from the Humane Society. I love her, my eyes swell shut, my nose itches and runs, scratchy throat, etc. Both my kids are always coughing at night when they get around her. The pediatrician says it is probably due to the cat. I love her to death, but I dont want to be miserable for the next 15years. What should I do????
I dont pet her that much due to the allergy, but she is still so loved :)
Also we live in an apt and do not have the best circulation, but I did purchase a good air filter and helps a little but, but not enough!

What can I do next?

I get allergy shots and take all kinds of allergy meds. We used to have a cat and I had to take it to the animal shelter because I broke in hives also. It was hard to do but I made sure the cat went to a good home with all the extras (food dish, toys, cat house, litter, etc.) Sorry if you have to let your "family" member go.

Allergic - I'd say find her a good home and stay away from cats. Your suffering is not worth it.

I know what you're going through. My husband was allergic and I didn't care enough to get rid of them for him, but as soon as my son was allergic it was "you're outta here" So, there is an organization that takes in cats, puts them in foster care and adopts them out. You have to pay to have this done, but it was a small amount for my piece of mind. My cats were my babies before I had babies of my own and I needed to know they were going to be well taken care of.

The problem is, I can't remember the name of the organization. The only thing coming into my mind is St. Jude (obviously NOT right) So, let me think about it and look on-line to see if I can remember. I'll be in touch.

If possible bathe your cat. That will help alot. If not try changing the cat litter. Sometimes it is really not the cat but the cat litter that she is using causing the allergies. Also try changing the food if changing the litter doesn't help. You can also trim her hair. It won't hurt her a bit. If that doesn't work then I would say get rid of her. I had cats for years and then didn't have any for awhile and started having allergies when around them. Now I have two beautiful cats that live with me and very seldom do they bother me at all. Good Luck!
