Carseat for Truck's Jumpseat

Hey moms,

I'm posting on behalf of a friend. She's due in a month. Their only car is a toyota pickup. They're looking for a carseat that will fit in the back jumpseat of the truck. Their truck does not have an extended or king cab. They haven't found one yet. Any suggestions or experience with this issue?

What can I do next?

If the truck does not have air bags in the front seat, you could just put the car seat in the front and have the mom ride in back...it is an option if it is the only car they have. We had a full size pick-up for a while and it is perfectly legal to have a carseat in the front if it is the only place one will fit and there is no airbag, or it can be turned off.
The baby has to be in a rear facing carseat for the first year. If this is not an option, I would tell them to start looking for a new car.

You should contact the police regarding the laws. For the first year, a baby's carseat must be REAR facing, and car seats are not recommended (and may not be legal, from state to state) in the front seat. Here is a link to the national highway transportation safety for children passengers: http://www.nhtsa.gov/portal/site/nhtsa/menuitem.9f8c7d635....

If they want to do the best thing for their child, they should trade in that car, or buy another, safer one for the child. I have an old Volvo that I bought for $1500, that is very safe, and there are lots of those out there for sale.

Good luck, and encourage them to extend themselves for their child's well-being....

Child car seats really should face forward, I think its the law. Some jump seats are sideways. I would think the child will have to be in the passanger seat up front. Any other passengers will have to squeeze in elsewhere. Starting and stopping is hard on a baby's neck if they are seated sideways. But better that than no car seat at all...Something I occasioally do see! Crazy!

is it legal (or safe ) to put a car seat in the back? I'm pretty sure that car seats are a standard size for each weight.

SORRY FOR THE DOUBLE POST, I HIT THE BUTTON TWICE. OOPS!

Hello,

Although I'd advise you to check the safetly requirements and take the seat you purchase somewhere for inspection once it's installed, there are special instructions for install with the lapbelt on some seats. We have put our infant seat in our extended cab, but it seems you don't have one. You want to make sure too, that either the passenger rides in back as well, or that there is sufficient room for the airbag and passenger safety in front. You may want to trade the truck in for an equally valued sedan!
