I have an almost 4 yr old and a 20 month old who are still in restraints obviously. My daughter has graduated to a Graco booster she is just over 40lbs and my son is still in a 5 point harness Graco sport carseat.I have a friend who is now buying her two kids Britax because she says it's the safest there is and the "cheap" carseats do not with stand crashes. It makes me kind of feel like a bad mom, but I do believe my kids are safe in their seats. Graco is a trusted brand and I have never had issues with them. So I guess my question is should I trust my feelings and continue to use the carseats we have or should I break the bank and buy the Britax??

What can I do next?

I think unless you are currntly shopping for new carseats, you don't need to go spend the money on new ones. I agree that the name brand car seats are perfectly safe as long as they are installed properly. My son does have a Britax seat, which I love, but that's only because his grandparents gave money to buy his new car seat, so we had the money. Otherwise, we would have bought a Graco. I think you're kids are perfectly safe with what they are in.

Ps...I also live in The Colony! I haven't seen many mama's who live here!

You are gonna hear a lot about how safe and wodnerful Britax is, but really, most car seats are very safe..IF THEY ARE INSTALLED PROPERLY!! So, if you are concerned, go check that to get some peace of mind. Lots of fire stations and even children's hospitals have car seat inspectors that would be willing to help you out! And, I would put the 4 year old back in a harness for sure! That is the thing I think is the most unsafe:) They are just not mature enough to sit properly all the time, and really, if something happens and the seat belt comes apart in crash, then your 4 year old goes flying. If she is in a car seat, at least she stays buckled to the seat. Better yet, install it with the latch system!! I am considering buying the new Graco (I think it is a Nautilus) and using that one for my 2 year old. Good luck..you are not a bad mom...money does not buy parenthood! For me it is a lot like knowing that a Honda mini van may have better crash ratings than my Ford Freestar, but I cant afford the Honda, so I do the best I can with what I have. My kids are as safe as I can make them!! ~A.~

I agree with Amber. You'll be fine with just about any name brand car seat that you bought new. Proper installation is a must too. I have been to the hospital to have them checked 4 times for various seats and every time they have found something I did wrong. It is free and they encourage you to go back if you are ever not sure if it is installed properly. I feel silly sometimes, but it is well worth some embarrassment to know my kids are as safe as possible. With that said, I did in fact just buy the new Britax Frontier for my almost 3 year old. He had a Britax Boulevard before, and my daughter was in a Graco, but I am moving her to his old Boulevard and him to the new Frontier. It supposedly goes to 100lbs once you convert it to a booster seat so I figure it saves me having to buy a booster in the long run. And yes, I am going to get both seats rechecked once I install the new one. BTW, check online if you decide to go with a Britax. If you order from out of state you save on sales tax and most places offer free shipping. I got mine from www.Elitecarseats.com I have also been happy with www.albeebaby.com

I don't think you need a Britax, but you should look into putting your daughter back into a five point harness rather than a booster. There are several that use the harness up to 65 or even 80 pounds. Much safer than a booster!

I was looking at getting a new carseat and really liked the Graco Nautilus, which has excellent safety ratings & is half the price of a Britax. It's a five point harness up to 80 pounds and then converts to a booster.

What is funny is when we were looking for a seat (not infant carrier) the Evenflow Triumph got higher safety ratings than the Britax....we checked with some consumer reports website. Just because it is bigger and more expensive does not mean it tests better than all the other cheaper seats. Do your homework---that stands more weight than what someone thinks is right.

We currenty have the Nautilus (graco, I believe) and it is great.
