Currently my kids go to daycare in Johnston, however we are in the Des Moines school district. I have applied for open enrollment with Johnston, but if we don't get accepted what am I suppose to do with my daughter if she only gets into 1/2 day kindergarten in Des Moines ??? Do Des Moines schools do a full-day care in the schools ? Or am I going to leave work to take her to and from kindergarten ?? Does anybody know ??
I am panicing.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am still having a problem. Des Moines denied our request to transfer to Johnston. :( So we are signing up for Kindergarten tonight. There are 3 sessions of full day, they are drawn on a lottery basis. If you don't get in then you are automatically 1/2day AM Kindergarden. If Sarah is only in 1/2day, there is a big problem, the school doesn't have any care for 1/2dayers. So I would have to leave work in Clive, and drive everyday to pick her up and take her some where else for the afternoon.
I am sooo hoping we get the all day kindergarten.

Just a question. Are there only certain schools in the DM district that offer full-day? For WDM, there was only one school this that didn't do full-day, and by 2008 the district says they will be. I know in WDM as of april I can sign my son up early (1 year in advance) to ensure his enrollment.

i would call the DM school you are interested in and talk to them about your concerns. Most schools are going to be converting to full-day. Ask them what your options are going both ways. And if they say she'll have to be 1/2 day, ask them who specifically will be responsible for her then since you are working. I have heard from teachers that DM schools are not having such a problem w/overflow that the "Burbs" are having, and they get a lot of calls about that and they really haven't reached a point that someone's not going to get in.

Don't fret. Nearly all of the kindergarten programs in Des Moines are now full day. It's pretty hard to find half-day anymore. Find out what your local school offers. If it's full-time, then your problem is solved. There are also after-school programs, some of which will pick her up after school. Check into it now. If you are anywhere near downtown, there's CCYC ###-###-####) which is a wonderful program and has aftercare. If you're not near there, call your local school and ask them. Good luck.

Kindegarten in some of the Des Moines Schools are full day, some are 1/2 day and some offer both, however those that offer both have a system where you tell them you want your child in full day and basically they draw names out of a hat and then you are notified if your child was chosen for 1/2 day or full day. Call the Elementary School and talk with them, they will be able to tell you your options.

As far daycare, my daughter attends Metro Kids Care at her school. I drop her off every morning before school and she goes everyday after school untill I get off of work. They also offer 1/2 day childcare in some schools for Kdg. I am sure they will have some informational packets for you at Kdg. Round Up, but you can also call ###-###-####; or check online at www.dmps.k12.ia.us

I know yo've heard this already, but just to re-emphasize, most Kindergartens in DMPS are full day. Round up starts in 2 week so, call your home school ASAP!
