Car Seat Rentals

We are going to visit the in-laws next month in Ireland and I am confused about baby seat rentals. There is no way we are carrying our two big car seats, so we are going to rent them. The car rental place rates the baby seats from baby to 3. I have a very tall 3 year old that will be 4 in March. Do I get her a booster or the baby seat?

I can't imagine putting her in a booster, but I don't want her smashed into a small baby car seat either. We have to drive from Dublin to the West coast were my in-laws live, so we will be in the car for an extended period of time.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone!

No direct flights into Shannon anymore, not since the economy crashed. Ireland in Dec-January is miserable. Thanks for the well wishes, but seriously, the weather is miserable. Truly, bone biting cold, when it's only 50 degrees. Ireland is a lovely but weird place.

Speak to them about specifics. What brand are they going to offer you? Then research the options and sizes and find out. They may call a convertible a "baby seat" but it might fit your child just fine. I would go with a harness if possible. Your DH might be better versed in driving in Ireland but I'd get all the extra protection I could for driving on narrow roads on the "wrong" side.

(We brought ours, so I don't know what rental companies offer. We found that once the seat was in baggage we were unencumbered - we used the airport trolley for transport. It was fairly easy to get it to the rental car and then we had a seat we and DD were familiar with. You can also get an adapter to make them into a stroller, FYI.)

That's about a 2.5 hr drive. I'd go with the booster seat, not knowing what you'll get with the "baby" seat.
Do your inlaws know?

(PS: have you booked your travel yet? If you fly into Shannon, you can shave about 2 hrs off of your drive...)

Booster for the 3 yr old would work best I think. Usually boosters fit children 35 lbs and more. Have fun in the Emerald Isle. My husband and I vacationed there in Fall 2003 and have vowed to go back some day. We've had 3 kids since so gotta wait until they are old enough to enjoy travel so it will feel like a vacation for all. Best wishes! Midwife Mom

Booster or just put her in the seatbelt.
