Hi, C.! I have great news for you: The airlines do not charge for car seats. Be sure to wrap it when you check it, it gets really dirty from all the handling.
Have a great flight!
We are flying to Florida for Christmas. My son is five and doesn't need a car seat for the plane but since we have to pay for checked baggage, what are my options? We are flying United. We will need a car seat when we get to Florida. Has anyone checked a car seat at the plane? Do you have to pay?

We just flew United to Florida last week. YOu can check the car seats for free.
From my experience (continental) you can check either a stroller or car seat for free. You could check the stroller and take the car seat up to the terminal and check it in there. Plus that way it will be handled less and won't be damaged. Car seats are like helmets-once there dropped or damaged you have to get a new one. Call your airlines for the specific information so you're not surprised.
We flew to Hawaii in March on United and had to check my daughter's car seat since she didn't use in the plane. There was no cost for this. I believe when you check in (if you are checking in through the kiosks) there is an option for car seat check-in when you are checking in your baggage. Otherwise you can let the person at the counter know. But, either way we were not charged for checking our car seat as baggage. Enjoy Florida!
