Hello moms, I'm hoping someone has figured out how to deal with this: When we're out and about, my daughter's carseat gets hot on sunny, days, and it's hard to get it cool enough to be comfortable for her to ride in without waiting forever. I'd REALLY appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you, you wonderful women! I really appreciate all your responses. I'm going to keep a couple of white towels in the car and also check on Amazon and One Step Ahead for a reflective cover.

I don't have this problem myself yet, but my grandmother used to put towels over her leather seats to keep them from getting too hot. Maybe that will help. Good luck!
Have a GREAT day!

I actually bought the flexible ice packs (3 across and about 15 down) from Bed, Bath, and Beyond - they work great! A friend told me about them when my son was a baby and BB and B knew what I was asking for when I went. They are nice to have around anyway, because they are lighter weight ice packs and more flexible for my son's small coolers.
I keep a towel in my car it works for keeping the seat cool and has helped out in messy situations more than once.
My friend found a car seat cover that had pockets all over it that fits on top of the car seat. They're the right size to put frozen gel packs in so her kids don't fry - she also lives in AZ.
We keep an old towel in the car to throw over the top. If it is not in direct sun, it doesn't get as hot. And we crack a couple windows to keep the whole car cooler.
I just read a tip about this...bring ice packs with you and leave them in the seat. wrap something around the buckle. and of course try to park in the shade if you can.
Hi, what we always did was take a throw blanket and fold it to the car seat. you can even put it under the belts and all. We found that way its not to hot in the summer, but also not to cold in the winter. They are removeable to easaly wash.
We just use blankets to cover ours. That seems to works just fine. Hope that helps.
I think putting a towel over might help. It at least keeps direct sunlight off. Tinted windows help, too.
I bought some cheap hand towels and keep them in the car in summertime. I put those down on the seat before I put my daughter on the seat. Then she's just sitting on a warm towel instead of the hot seat.
Try blocking it from the sun by draping a blanket over it from the seat in front to the back of the seat it's in.
Also carry another blanket in your pack/diaper bag that has the cut outs for seat belts and place it on the carseat before sitting your wee one in the seat; since you had the blanket with you and not in the car, it won't be hot and will buffer the heat of the seat.
You can also try putting a blanket or other obstruction in the window nearest the carseat. Using those reflective windshield covers really does help. You can get the ones that come in two pieces and place them in each of your car windows all around to help reduce the heat inside.
Hope that helps.
My mom covered our vinyl carseats with terrycloth towels. Cheaper towels, no need to go to Bed Bath & Beyond or anything, Kmart would work too. She sewed covers, but then she can sew most anything. It would work just to tuck it around, or find somebody who can sew covers for the plastic arm rests (I'm going to have to cover armrests because my darling boy was using his covers for mittens & who knows where they went!)
For booster seat armrests, you could probably use a couple of pairs of socks instead of sewing anything.
My parents live in Arizona and they swear by those fold out sun blockers that you put on the inside of your winshield, they keep the inside of the car much cooler.
The silver reflective car window shade for your windshield. Back window too if you're in a really hot sunny area. I used old phone books to help prop up the back one.
Also, get a white towel to lay over the carseat. The white refects the light/heat better. My grandma always put a white towel over her stearing wheel, no windowshade, and took it off and drove away, no burnt hands.
Try a WHITE towel. The white will help to reflect/refract the sun so it doesn't absorb heat like dark colors. Just toss it over the seat when you get out. The car may still be hot, but it should at least be usable. (The hot car... a beast unto itself!)
An old beach towel would work great. You could also try a white sheet, but because it is thinner more sun will get through it (like it does your clothing).
Cheap and fast. :)
You can find the car seat covers on Amazon.com. They sell the $12 version - the reflective elasticized cover - and the padded, insulated, ice pack type too. I bought the reflective one, but haven't used it yet. I figured that plus a towel would work fine, but I am also looking for better reflective window covers - our car is black inside and miserable in the summer.
When we lived in Tucson, I used to put a blanekt over the carseats. They are still kinda warm - but you can put your kids in them and not burn them (unless you touch them with the metal parts!)
Hi J F - I'm sure you have a couple of receiving blankets around the house - I keep a couple of light colored ones in the car and drape them over our car seats to shade them the sun. I also always put a sunshade in the front window. The receiving blankets also come in handy to sit on if the seats are too hot.
The other thing that helps on a really hot day is to allow the car to "air out" for a few minutes before getting in. I open up the doors while I'm packing my things into the car - the air circulation really does a lot to cool off that "oven" feeling
Hope that helps!
I always made sure to cover the car seats up with at least a blanket when I left the car. It would still be warm when I'd put my kids in, but not hot, and certainly not scalding from sitting in the sun.
Also, if you could put one of those shade slips that attach to the window, that would help as well.
Good luck!
One Step Ahead has a carseat cover that works great. It has elastic on the edges so it fits very well around the seat. It folds up, so it doesn't take up room. And it acts the same as one of those windshield sun-reflectors. I've used mine for 2 summers and it still works great.
I would buy a sunviser or whatever they are called. They can be silver or other colors. You put them up in your windshield and it cools down your car.
I throw a light colored blanket over her seat to keep it out of the sun.
When all else fails, get out a towel! Use it on the seat when she's in it, and drape it over the seat whenever she's not in it. It's a time-tested way to beat the heat, at least a little bit. Do you put "shades" over the windshield when the car is sitting out in the sun? That helps as well.
