My 2-1/2 year old son is not very tall(34"), but has a long torso and short legs. We are having difficulty finding a convertible car seat that accommodates him while still staying in our budget. Don't get me wrong, I would love to say the sky's the limit when it comes to his safety, but I still need to keep a roof over his head and food on his plate. So I need a good car seat for the money. We have sat in a number of high back seats without much growing room (2 inches tops), but I was wondering if anyone out there has had these same issues. So far we have shopped at Walmart and Target and looked a quite a few online. I also need a seat with a 5 point harness since my son is only 30-pounds.

What can I do next?

I have the Graco Nautilus and I LOVE it! It goes up to 52" and 65 lbs with a 5 point harness....the only one I found to go to that extent. Using just a seat belt (with or without the back support,) it takes you up to 100 lbs. It's extremely easy to adjust, which is great with coat/no coat weather. I have heard that some seat belts may not be a match, depending on how high up from the seat the latch itself is. It fits fine for us and is the most solid seat I've seen. It was $150. More than some, less than most.

We have two of the Alpha Omega convertible car seats and they have a thing on the back that makes them slide up and down for taller children. They're still more expensive than the ones you might find at Target or Walmart, but I think they may sell them at Sam's Club.

My daughter rode in hers until just a few months ago when she switched to the high-back booster, but she still could have ridden in it for a long time - she's almost 4 years old.

I actually don't have that problem, my daughter is extemely tall for her age, so I can't relate on that aspect, but I don't understand about the budget! Have you tried the Alpha Omega Elite? I've been told by Car Seat Technicians that it is the same safety-wise as the Britax but it is much cheaper and it's still pretty easy to use!! We have one in both our cars and we love it. This is always such a tough issue, I wish you well...hope you find one that fits all your needs! :)

Have you checked out the Graco Nautilus? It's a 3-in-1, so they start out in a 5-point harness, then it converts to a booster, then a backless booster. It should be the last carseat he needs. My 4 year old is in one and she loves it. We just ordered one for my 2.5 year old as well. Amazon is running a sale on them right now for $129.98 plus free shipping. They are also at Target if you want to see them in person.

S., we have a similar problem but ours it just so tall. She is about to turn 3 and has been in the same convertable car seat since about 8-9 months. It is an Evenflo carseat. She loves it. It is similar to the Evenflo Triumph. We go it at BabiesRUS, for about $150. It is not the cheapest but not the most expensive. The Triumph there online has 3 different steps from the regular all the way up to the premier. The first one was $140 up to $180. Just make sure that you have read the reviews on the carseat too. I looked over them quickly and it has some great reviews it has 4/5 stars. Let me know if you have any other questions. We really like ours and are looking for a toddler seat for our 3 year old because we have a 3 month old as well and want to reuse the seat for the next one. Best of luck!

Hi! I have the exact same problem with my youngest. He is about 36" & 34 lbs. He is safer in a 5 point so I searched many seats & found the Graco Nautilus 3 in 1 carseat. It goes up to 65 lbs. in the 5 point & my son who was on the top slot in another seat now has 2-3 slots left. My oldest (who is 7) is about to be too tall for his belt postioning booster, but the Nautilus has one more level for him too! It would be strange, but in the Nautilis my 7 year old (who also has a long torso) could still be in the 5 point harness on the top slot! I'm sure you have seen it at Wal-Mart or Target. They are $150 at Wal-Mart & $160 at Target. Much less expensive than at Brianx.

Check it out!

God Bless!

Lots of police stations or sheriffs have free car seats. Here they don't even ask for info about income and stuff, they just hand it to you, well, they install it for you, so you get not only a free seat, you get it checked by a certified tech.

My son is 2.5, and just grew out of the first convertible seat we bought him. So I have a huge opinion of seats, as I really don't want to have to buy another one. After a lot of feedback on here, and shopping on my own. I found the Graco Nautilus, it is awesome! You can find them for around $135 online, usually with free shipping. It has a five point harness that goes up to 65lbs, most only go up to 40 lbs. This lets you keep them in a five point harness for much longer, some kids up to 6 years old! My son is already 40" tall and 40 lbs, and he is now sooooo comfortable in this new seat. With a lot of room to grow and still be in the five point harness. After I bought one for my car and my husband's, I found out that two other sets of friends bought the same seat for their son's too. Reviews are awesome on line too! They have them at Target and Wal Mart too, so you can go check it out and then save about $30-40 by buying it online instead.

Hi S.,

I don't believe in brands, I think that if your child feels confortable and you purchase a car seat in a regular store, it should work. I might be wrong.
I found this one with high back very inexpensive, check it out. It seems good to me:)

I purchased mines at walmart and Target and did their job.
Good luck!

Walmart - cosco high back booster car seat. It's around $40 - I loved this seat because it is a 5 pont harness but you can also remove the straps so as my kids got bigger they could still use them with a regular buckle that went through a slot on the side. Great comfort great price long lasting. Good Luck
