Can't Stop Eating

I am 11 weeks today and never seem full. For lunch I ate a salad and two little bags of chips (the $.33 ones) and an orange and I'm still hungry. How do I fill up? I'm not a big fan of eating veggies and I love fruit and meat. Please help I'm afraid that I'm going to gain too much weight.

What can I do next?

With my experience(I'm 36wks along), I couldn't get full enough in the first trimester, but by the time I was showing more, I could hardly eat a few bites w/o feeling stuffed! It all evens out, so keep up w/ the fruit and don't worry if it has carbs or not, it's good for you and most likely you'll gain a normal amount of weight. Congrats!!

PROTEIN! Make sure you eat lots of protein. Don't be afraid of carbs, you need those too. It's normal to feel famished when pregnant. The baby needs lots of calories. Don't worry about gaining weight. It will happen, it has to happen, and it's all for a good reason. My advice - don't even look at the scale. I didn't look at the scale my entire 2nd pregnancy. After baby you can worry about getting your weight back down healthily.

Make sure you get plenty of protein with that salad. A side of grilled chicken, fish, or turkey is really good. Or even to put it on your salad, if you prefer.

You have to remember gaining a little weight is normal in pregnancy. You need to eat things that aren't bad for you, like chips. Stay away from fried food and try to bake or grill as much as possible. Get pleny of protein and veggies and make sure you drink milk and take your vitamins. Your baby is growing inside of you. Don't keep all the nutrients away from him/her that babies need.
Congrats!

Constant hunger is just part of being pregnant. Don't worry about your weight too much. You're going to gain a lot of it and there's no stopping that. Your baby needs it to be healthy. Unless you have diabetes or some other serious health issue, stop worrying and FEED YOUR BABY. In my experience, you can never fill up for long! No matter what I ate, I would be hungry again an hour later. It's miserable but you may as well accept it. Keep granola bars and bananas on your bedside table because you will soon be starving in the middle of the night as well. Just eat healthy and don't try to starve yourself. You need lots of protein. Meat, fish, tofu, nuts, eggs, milk, soy milk, etc... Or wash everything down with a protein smoothie. Insubstantial stuff like salads won't cut it. Welcome to pregnancy!!

hopefully,
i was starving my entire pregnancy. good news was i didn't gain more than about 30 lbs (which was fine with my dr. by the way. different dr's tell you different things, but i really think all the "rules" are ridiculous since everyone and every pregnancy is different - plus i lost the extra weight within two weeks of having him anyway). your body is working overtime right now and that's why you're craving the calories. but being hungry all the time (to the point of being faint!) was sooo annoying! i tried to enjoy it though :) my solution was #1, i drank about 4-5 bottles of water throughout the day, and #2 i ate several small snacks (granola bars, crackers, etc) as well. dried fruit, fruit snacks are good too. just as long as you're not eating little debbies and doritos all the time, use your common sense. and talk to your dr. if you still have questions. congratulations!

Your OB/GYN should give you some direction on how much weight is healthy for you to gain based upon where you started, your stature, etc.

Generally, an expecting Mom can consume ~300-350 extra calories/day to account for the energy needed for the baby to develop.

Fruit is not bad, but it is higher in carbs than veggies, so they need to be somewhat limited (you'll be checked for gestational diabetes in a few weeks). Meats are OK, but you'll need to be careful of consumption of certain kinds of fish, raw meats, and lunch meats (for fear of lysteria contamination). Chicken, pork, beef are all cook as long as they're cooked to medium or above.

I was constantly hungry in the first trimester, but as my babies grew, they pressed against my stomach, and I actually ate less. I gained 17 lbs with one child and 20 with another.

Good luck! Enjoy the food right now - no one will notice you're getting too much bigger

Hi! I'm almost 17 weeks along and had a similar problem, but mostly because of no appetite with nausea. I can't eat too much at a time either because my stomach starts to feel crampy if I do. It helps alot to eat protein. Eggs and chicken are best for me, I can't stand the smell of red meat cooking right now. Protein will stay with you and give you energy longer than any veg and fruit, though they are super important for their nutrients. The protein also helps maintain blood sugar levels so you aren't spiking and falling through out the day. Eat lots of whole grains too. Hope that helps!

You don't mention whether you ate any protein for lunch! You have to eat lots of protein when you are pregnant, every three hours. And don't worry about the weight. You are growing a baby, so if you are hungry, eat! It's not the time to diet. Just make healthy choices: low fat meat, healthy fats, veggies, fruits, whole grains.

How about adding some meat to your salad, and drinking a big glass of milk with it? You need that too!!

Since you are pregnant-it seems your body is screaming for more protein to feed you new baby-so get a "diet for pregnancy" book and see what wonderful things you should be eating-I bet you will find the right items that will also quench your hunger. You are eating for two and sometimes you require more vitamins and nutrients than realized so if you cannot find something in your local library and or bookstore then check in with your doctor-this is really important for both of you! Happy Eating!!!!

With my first pregnancy, I ate everything in sight. With my second, I couldn't eat hardly anything the entire 9 months!

Something that really helped me through my first was I always had small, filling snacks around. I ate apples with peanut butter almost every day. I also drank a ton of water. Yogurt was also a lifesaver for me. Popcorn, too.

I echo what someone else said: PROTEIN! It helps keep you full. You do need extra calories right now, and it's kind of easy to go overboard. I know some of my friends gained 70 pounds because they just ate whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. But if you listen to your body, you'll know what and how much to eat.

Good luck on your pregnancy! I pray all goes well for you!
