Hi Moms,
My 20 yo son has sores on the inside of his mouth. He says they have like a white pimple in the middle and red around them.I'm guessing they're canker sores. He is having a rough time eating anything. He has tried salt water anfd alum, but they haven't helped. He is looking for a quick easy cure. Anyone one know of such a thing and are we right that they are canker sores? Thanks in advance H.

What can I do next?

Ouch! Canker sores are awful. In a pinch he can take 1 capful of Hydrogen Peroxide, swish then hold it in his mouth for 2-3 minutes, then spit it out. My husband and I have also used Peroxyl by Colgate. It's a mouthwash for mouth sores and it helps relieve the pain as well as clear up the sore.

Hi H.,

Momma11 is right that L-Lysine will get rid of them. It will also prevent them. It's simply an amino acid that our body is supposed to have but seems to get depleted with stress or illness or working/playing too hard. I would go somewhere like Vitamin Shoppe or a health store that carries pharmaceutical grade supplements instead of CVS or Walgreens. It's not anymore expensive and you'll get a better quality and they will be standardized so that you get the same amount in each tablet or capsule.

Hope this helps.

I used to get them all the time. I mean 20+ at a time. I received many of the suggestions below, some worked better than others. For me, I found that my toothpaste played a huge role. My dentist said Auquafresh and Mentadent are the worst. I use Colgate and make sure I do not switch. Last time I ran out and used my daughters Crest, BIG mistake! Canker sores are terrible!! Good luck.

I'm prone to getting them. I've tried EVERYTHING... Tell him to DEFINITELY get canker covers.. They sell them at Walgreens, CVS, vitamin store, etc... It's a little white pill that you stick on the canker sore and it covers it.. It puts medicine into the canker sore and at the same time, it gives you relieve from the pain...100% recommend it!!!!!!!!!!

It just takes time. I know they hurt like the devil but it takes time. Warm salt water every half hour helps. Just a little, like 1/4 cup with a couple dashes of salt, pour it on the lip/gums as best he can, holding the lip out, over a sink. Swishing it in his mouth might hurt more is it stretches the lip out and tears the blister a bit. Brushing his teeth,,be careful not to scratch it. And some say ambesol helps. Poor guy, I hope hes better soon.

Super Lysine helps. There are drops you can find at health stores, put about 25 drops in some milk or water and repeat every few hours.

The lysine makes a huge difference. You can get other products that are a gel that makes a cover over the sore (hurts less so you can eat). Zilactin and Campho-Phenique are 2 brands but there may be others available.

Make some strong black tea in a stainless steel pan. Lemon balm apparently works too. Make it *really* strong. Boil it down until there's almost nothing left (but don't scorch it). Pour it into the top of a jar and leave it out to dry.

When the medicine is "fresh" (wet), you can stick a cotton swab into it. Dab the tea concentrate onto the sore. When the medicine is dry, use a wet cotton swab and rub it around until the cotton swab discolors (kind of like watercolors). Dab the tea concentrate onto the sore, as before.

This helps with pain, dramatically improves healing time, and is pretty non-toxic. Obviously, don't do this if you have serious allergies to tea or lemon balm. Also, don't choke on the cotton swab. I can't think of any other hazards.

Good luck!

I used to get them all the time.
I used Orajel (inside the mouth med to apply to the canker sore)............helped and loved it.
It's only temp pain med but it helps for those first 3 days that they really hurt.
I always did the salt/warm water mouth swish every hour.
It seems like it just takes the above and.....tiime.

EDIT: lol, I thought you said 20 month old! Well, he could probably check his own hands and feet!

Check his hands and feet too. He may have Hand Foot and Mouth disease which isn't serious, but can make a child miserable and be very uncomfortable. You can paint the sores with a teething or mouth gel from the pharmacist which helps the pain.

I used to get these all the time and still do depending on my diet, stress, etc. They're a painful nuisance!

They can be brought on by acidic foods. I know tomatoes were a big trigger for me.

The salt water gargle is a good place to start. I suggest putting a dab of baking soda on there at least three times a day. It tastes salty and you don't want to swallow it, but it will make a big difference in a day or so.

Good luck!

If he goes to the dr he can get Magic Mouthwash - it works overnight. My dr has told me though that the most active ingredient in that is Mylanta, so he could swish with Mylanta. It's the same principle as the baking soda.

Go to CVS, Walgreens, Walmart etc. and get L-Lysine in the vitamin section. Have take about 1000-1500mg for a few days. I have had these sores all of my life and learned about taking this from this site and it works! I notice a difference in less than 24 hours.

My husband has gotten these since he came back from the Gulf War years ago, as his brother in law as well when he came back from the Gulf War. (thanks Saddam and your chemical agents) Theirs are more holes though. What they've both found is using Listerine and rinsing thoroughly multiple times during the day, and using Ambisol to numb it before eating. Because they get these often they rinse their mouths nearly every day just once time. If these become more frequent he may want to rinse his mouth once a week, or more often to keep them at bay. Kills the bacteria in the mouth to keep the sores down.
