We have a Graco backless booster seat that we bought from Target. It is on Consumer Reports best booster list, so I figured it was a good one to buy. And it only cost $17. Good luck!
I am looking to buy my son (4 1/2) a booster seat for our 2nd car. He is currently in a Britax seat in my suv. He will rarely be in my husbands car,so I thought I would look for a booster as I will eventually need one.I noticed in the preschool drop off line that only a few people still have their kids in car seats. He's my oldest so I was wondering if others have moved their 4 yr olds to a booster and if so can you reccomend a good booster seat with high safety ratings. Thanks in advance!!
After I posted this question channel 7 and GMA did something on booster seats. Had some great info. They actually didn't reccomend the Graco Nautalis. Great resource

The recommended age/weight for moving a child to a booster is 5 years and 50lbs. This is the bare minimun your child should be when moving. I would recommend getting a Nautilus and keeping him harnessed to 65lbs and then moving the booster setting. Don't look at what other parents are doing. Follow the recommended guidelines, if possible.
It's best to keep them in a 5 point harness as long as possible. I would recommend the Graco Nautilus. The Nautilus starts as a 5 point up to 65 pounds. Then it turns into a high back booster up to 100 pounds, then a backless booster.
My daughter just turned 5. She's in the 5 point in my car, and the high back booster in my husband's car, which she is rarely in.
I would keep him in the 5 point harness until he reaches the weight and/or height limit. Most Britax seats except for one are 65 lbs. I have the Britax Frontier for my 3 1/2 year old because it looks more like a "big kid booster" but it's still a car seat and is very roomy. She's big for her age and looking at a marathon, I thought there would be know way she could fit in it until 65 lbs. Don't worry what everyone else is doing, a 5 point harness is ALWAYS the safest option.
I also have the Graco from Target but mine has a back. It is really great because the seat belt goes through the loop on the side which helps it to lay where it should on the child. I do recommend this one- we actually have 2 with a back and on that is backless now! Check with your local state highway patrol (or other agency) to get the booster seat laws in your state. Ohio law is 4 years, 40 pounds, 40 inches. My daughter was 40lbs and 40 inches well before 4 years old. However a friend of mine had her tiny little daughter (who is in 1st grade and still doesn't weight 40 pounds) in her car seat well into Kindergarten. I think she switched to a booster at end of school year. She was way, way, way too tall for it. LOL it was funny watching her bend way down in the floorboard of the back seat to be able to fit under the bar that goes across the lap and then slide herself up into her straps. LOL.
Yes I did move my daughters at 4... they were big, tall girls. But my son wasn't at 4 so he was in a carseat until right before he turned 5. I wouldn't worry about what everyone else at Pre-K is doing. What you know is safest and most comfortable for your child is what you should do. Check your laws and follow your mom insticts. Hope this helps :)
ABC channel 7 just had a story about which booster seats are best with new safety testing etc. and which seats didn't do so well. It was on within the last couple of days. I tried to pay attention but there were too many seats (and I'm not quite ready to buy one yet)! They said the info would be on their website.
