Can Weaning Cause Hairloss?

So I know a lot of women experience a bit of hair loss after giving birth (and I know hair loss can be a sign of thyroid issues). But can weaning cause sudden hair loss? My daughter is 11 months old. About a week and half ago she dropped one of her nursing session. And last week I started the process of weaning her. Right now I am only replacing one breastfeeding session with formula. This weekend I noticed A LOT of hair falling out...A LOT. Is this a normal/ hormonal thing because of the weaning? I don't remember this happening with my son. TIA

What can I do next?

yes, I always lose tons of hair while weaning. I'm a stylist and this is the best way I can explain it:

what happens is the hair you are supposed to lose while pregnant, doesn't fall out, hence the lush pregnant hair. once you give birth, the hormones that kept this hair starts to go and so does the hair. but you are still nursing so many of those hormones remain, then, when you stop, your hair that has been collecting for 9 months starts coming out all at once.

thyroid problems are another cause of hairloss, but if it is only happening after childbirth and weaning, then thryoid probably isn't the answer.

It could be a vitamin D deficient thing, I don't think it has anything to do with the weaning, I don't think you have cut down your breastfeeding enough for it to be a hormonal thing if it is..anyway look into the vitamin d thing. :) Hope thats all it is!

Yes - it happened to me with both kids. Good thing is that it wasn't ever as if I was balding, and it always grew back. I want to say it lasted a couple of weeks. I weaned my kids really slowly, dropping feedings only once a week until it was only at night/morning (respectively with each one). Even then, that last feeding lasted maybe a month before they stopped requesting. They were 18 months and 15 months.

I think that the initial "shock" of dropping a feeding causes the most hair loss, but if you just gradually do it, it will help.
