hi ~ i feel a little silly asking this, but i was wondering if we can give lunch meats (deli slice turkey, chicken etc) to infants? my daughter is 10 1/2 mos and i want to give her meat for protein. however, when we were prego i thought i remembered we weren't suppose to eat it for some reason? bacteria warning or something? (why can't i remember, lol) does the same go for infants? tia

What can I do next?

Hi, the bacteria you asked about is Campylobacter and Listeria. It's possible to get food poisoning from these bacterias on lunchmeats, hot dogs, etc. Bacterial growth from Listeria does not stop with refrigeration, so reheating these meats first is a good preventative. Consume foods within a few days and throw out lunchmeats that have been opened (in the fridge) for more than 4 or 5 days.

Lunchmeats do contain a lot of sodium and chemical preservatives. Avoid lunchmeats with nitrates. You could make your own healthy meats for baby by boiling organic chicken and shredding it up, freeze it into little containers. Do the same with a wild salmon fillet. If you cook an organic pork tenderloin roast for your family (super easy), chop or grind some of it up for baby, freezing some in little containers. By making your own baby food, you get to have control over the ingredients. Hope that helps!

Yes you can and Hormel makes a 100% natural kind that my kids love. You can find it at any grocery store too.

I give my daughter chicken all the time and she loves it. I just watch the sodium that's in it.

You can, and if you are worried about the bacteria just pop it in the microwave for a couple seconds to bring it to temp :)

Rinse it off first to get rid of some of the sodium.

You certainly can! Just make sure that, if you buy the packaged sort, there aren't any chemical preservatives in them. While it makes the meat last longer, youre probably better off getting it fresh from the deli in really small portions.
My daughter loves lunch meat, and now at 2 1/2, we often have rolled up turkey slices as a main course for lunch.
