Can My Pictures Be Saved??

I have about a years worth of pictures (including ALL my pregnancy photos from my daughter) on a CD. I was searching for a picture today and noticed that the CD has a crack on the backside and I cannot get it to load onto my computer. Are my pictures lost forever?? Or is there a way I can get the CD to load so I can save my pics to another disc? Is there a reputable company out there who can salvage them? I have searched the internet, but no matter what search parameters I type, I don't get anything remotely helpful.
Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses! I ended up taking the CD to Walgreens. They are still working on making me a new CD, but as of right now, they have salvaged 3/4 of my 500+ pictures!! Woo hoo!!

Try taking the CD to a photo center, like Target, Walmart or Walgreens. I remember when I thought my cd was damaged because it stopped working on my computer. I took it to Walmart and they were able to upload the pics there and gave me a new CD. Maybe they can do something to help you salvage the pictures. Good luck!

I'm so sorry this has happened to you. I'm not a professional photographer but I DO have a profound love interest in photography and I have personally researched on your behalf for a solution. I have come up with nothing. It seems if the cd was only scratched it could possibly be fixed...but not a totally cracked cd.

It is always advisable to have ALL of you precious digital images not on 1 but 2 disks. Use 1 disk and keep the other as an archive. The more you use a disk, the more wear and tear, the more you risk losing your data. Also, it is also advisable to store your images on archival gold disks rather than silver. Gold disks are more money but in the long term, they last longer. They are much more durable. They also offer the most resistance to oxidation, something that silver disks have a problem with. I store all of my digital images on DVD-R disks. They are called eFilm Archival Gold DVD-R by Delkin. I got them from Amazon.com. IF I find a solution, I will send you a personal message.

I would contact your local camera shop (even a chain store) and ask! They will know if it is possible and may be able to do it for you.

Good luck- and consider storing your pictures on a back-up drive!

Yea, I'm so excited that they are working on it for you. I know what it feels like to think you lost all of those memories. I'm a scrapbooker, so i have tons of pictures, and what was worked for me cause I once had a computer crash and lost some valuable pictures, is that I have an external hardrive hooked up to my computer that I have all my pictures saved on and its suppose to be burn proof and you can be disconnected and take it with you and hook it up to other computers. It is very convenient and makes me feel safe that my pictures are going to dissappear. Hope that helps!

Sounds like Walgreens is working out. So happy for you! I was just going to suggest that once you get your photos back, you might consider uploading them to your computer. Then subscribe to Carbonite or Mozy who will back up everything on your computer on a daily basis. You will never have to worry about keeping up with and protecting a CD.

Maybe check with Geek Squad or a computer technician in your area. Or if there is a hard drive recovery service in your area. I know it's a CD but they may be able to help or know someone that can.
