I just finished nursing my twins, its been a little over a year and I have always pumped and then bottle fed them do to their premature birth. I slowly stopped pumping from every 4 hours to every 5 hours all the way to once a day and once every other day. Its been 5 days since I have pumped and I am in so much pain. I have been wearing a very tight bra, I tried wrapping myself in ace bandages, I have worn no bra, nothing is working and its to the point where I cannot even hold my kids because it hurts to move my arms. They are very engourged and I hope its almost over. Does any one know any pain relief methods or how long it takes to lose your milk.

Thanks,
A.

It sounds weird, but cabbage leaves in my bra worked better than anything else I tried. It was instant relief and no pain as long as I wore them. It looks weird, so you'll want to take them out if you go anywhere. Cold ones work especially well. I don't know if it's true or not, but it also seemed to help my body absorb the milk or make less milk. doing this I had no pain and never even thought about using pain killer again. GL! I hope you get relief soon.

When I was really engorged and in pain when I first started nursing the lactation nurse at the hospital filled 2 diapers with hot water and put them on my chest. It really helped. Not sure if that would help with regards to losing your milk but it may help you feel more comfortable. Great job nursing twins to 1 year though!

Parsley will dry up your milk. You can buy it in pill form at any natural store, Vitamin Cottage or Whole foods. Keep doing what you are doing and try the parsley.

Good luck,

Go ahead and pump, relieve the pain! It's ok to go down to every other day, but do that for a week then cut to every three days for a week etc. Since you had twins you are probably producing alot of milk and your body needs time to slow that production down. Definately pump, you could get clogged ducts or an infection. It will probably take up to 6 weeks to be done with it.

It will hurt when you stop as you get engorged and it takes time for the milk to dry up.
It took me about a week or so with both of my kids when I stopped breast feeding. Try warm wash rags or heating pads to help. Warm steamy showers will help too! HUGs, a few more days and it will be better.

I know this is going to sound strange but it works! I was taught this trick by an African midwife when I had severe mastitis and it worked for that as well. Buy a head of fresh cabbage peel off the outer soft leaves until you come to the large crisp leaves. Take one and crumble it slightly, just enough to crack it and some thin fluid will leak out. Straighten the leaf back out and place it around your breast inside your bra. You should not smell bad and you can change the leaf two to three times per day and within a few days you will be able to tell the milk is drying up and you wont be in so much pain. Good luck

Sounds like you probably need to express some milk, if you can. Even if you have to express a few times over the course of days, the milk will slow down and stop soon.
Sorry you are in pain -- good luck to you.

I think you may have clogged some ducts with the tight bra and ace bandages. I would consult with a lactation specialist or your doctor to make sure you do not have an infection. When I stopped nursing, I gradually gave my son a bottle more frequently and my milk just eventually dried up. Good luck!
