Can I Nurse When I'm Sick?

I have a three month old baby boy and my three year old daughter was sick today. I'm not sick yet, but I almost always get it right after her (the vomitting stuff to be specific). I don't recall ever being sick when she was an infant so now am wondering, if I do get sick, can I still nurse my baby or will that make him sick?

What can I do next?

It's actually a GOOD thing to nurse when you are sick. Your body makes antibodies to fight the virus, and they get passed to your baby in your milk. Just make sure to check with your doctor before starting any meds. to make sure they are ok while nursing, and stay hydrated. :)

The best thing you can do for your baby when you are sick is nurse him. The illness doesn't go into the breastmilk and can't get him sick that way. In fact, breastmilk has wonderful antibodies and although it may not prevent him from getting sick, it may lessen the illness he gets. Of course, if you have to take any medications, you should definitely check with your doctor first.

Absolutely yes you can nurse while sick! In fact it's the best thing you can do for your baby. Your baby gets antibodies through your milk which will either provent them from getting sick or to get a much less severe case of the illness. Not nursing will damage your milk supply, especially when added to illness. Make sure to keep yourself hydrated as best you can and take it easy. When I get sick I set up my "nest" on the couch, the kids and I watch lots of cartoons on TV so I don't have to do a lot of expending energy and I keep water by me at all times and sip slowly all day until it passes.
Hope you're all better soon!

Yes, even if you do get sick your breastmilk has anti-microbial (germ fighting) properties, as well as antibodies to specific germs.

Just practice good hygiene (hand washing etc) to minimize the spread of germs.

Even better to do so! The antibodies in your milk should help hive him natural immunity to whatever you have been exposed to..

Keep nursing him. He has been exposed to the same bug, so if he gets it, it did not necessarily come from you. AND - when your body produces the antibodies needed to fight off the bug, you will be passing some of those along to the little guy, so he should get better faster. :) (Or not get sick to begin with.) That is one of the GREAT benefits of breastfeeding. :)
I hope you both stay healthy - but keep nursing even if not. :)

I had the worst case of the stomach bug when my daughter was 6 months old and I was nursing. Freaked me out to feed her but she was completely fine nursing. The rest of us were sick as dogs because we had all eaten the same contaminated food source. I just was super careful about handwashing and such during that time.

Absolutely still nurse... your body will quickly produce antibodies that will go to your baby. This way, if baby still gets sick, it will be greatly muted.

I'd get sick for 1-2 weeks while my infant would only be sick 4 days tops and never as sick as I was. It was the same in daycare and pre-school. Her classmates would be sick as dogs (and of course still go to daycare) and she'd get much less sick and bounce right back even before her classmates did.

Yes, you can absolutely nurse. Stay hydrated! That's very important for you, and it's important for you son. If you do not stay well hydrated, it's possible your supply will temporarily go down. Don't worry, it will go back up when you start to get better. But it's good to do everything you can to keep your supply up for him.

Hang in there. The stomach flu really stinks!

Being sick wont affect your baby. Taking drugs might tho, so make sure you ask your doc about meds you might take while you are feeling bad.

Whatever germs you've been exposed to, your baby has been exposed to, also. His immune system is not fully functioning, so the breastfeeding will allow your immune system to boost his and help him fight off the germs. Definitely breastfeed!

Absolutely. In fact, she will get your antibodies and be less likely to get what you have. I've nursed many a baby snuggled in a rocker or on the couch with me.
