Can I Increase My Milk Production?

Does anyone have any ideas or helpful hints about how I can increase my milk prodcution? I pump twice a day at work and usually only get between 3-5 total ounces. Is it even worth it at this point? I have looked up diets for nursing mothers and can't seem to find anything real useful. I would like to continue to nurse for as long as possible, even with working full time. On the weekends, we try to nurse and not pump, but we still need to supplement about two bottles a day. Is this normal or should I just give up?

What can I do next?

Don't give up! As hard as it may seem, just keep at it. I had the same problem and worked full time. Thankfully, I work with a Lactation Consultant and she told me the most important thing is to drink lots of water! Also, she said that when you get home in the evening and on the weekends try to pump for an hour, but not the whole hour! She said to watch t.v. and only pump during commercials-what this does is it tells your body that you need more milk, a little at a time! I only did it for a couple of evenings and it worked great!! Good luck and try not to worry!!

fenugreek will help.

It worked for me.

however it did upset my stomach.. so I would suggest starting with one pill a day.. and seein how it affects you.

drink water lots of water..

and nurse the baby alot whenyou are home.

it is tough to maintain a milk supply if you are not home.

I pumped the entire year even though my milk was about 4-6 oz a day. the water helped a LOT. I continue to breastfeed but he gets cow milk in the day now (13 months old). I breast fed exclusively when I was home and after he fed I Would pump and store any extra to supplement the following week. And of course your baby will be eating food soon and will slow milk down a bit. Its so well worth it every drop of breastmilk you can give is worth it!

good job on nursing this far with working!! i was lucky enough to stay home, well ok i have a daycare but iam still home, but go to your local vitamin store like gnc or something like that and buy fenugreek its a herb that helps you make more milk. have you tried a different pump?? some people are not good pumpers at all, i know i wasn't. all you can really do is pump pump pump. try to pump at the same times that you would nurse your daughter, believe it or not your boobs know when its time to nurse. the more you pump or nurse the more milk you will make! it will take a few days to increase your milk supply, just keep nursing and pumping it all will pay off in the end. call where you had your daughter, and ask for the laction person and she will be able to help you and point you in the right direciton. good luck

You can increase supply with Fenegreek capsules and Mother's Milk tea.. you can get them at a health food store like Whole Foods or online.

I'm not sure exactly though how much to take though. If that sounds like something you want to try, then PM me and I'll find out from my friends what they used. I have 2 friends that were concerned with supply and used the things above and it worked.

You might wnat to consider pumping more often at work if possible.. the more you pump the more you'll get so if you want pump one more time a day you might be able to increase.

Also, pump AFTER you little one nurses and you'll start to increase supply too. If you can pump one side while nursing on the other that worked well for me.

It's definetely worth it.. keep it up as long as you can! My son has had minimal colds and ZERO ear infections.. at 1 1/2 that's unusual.

Take in as much water as you can, get as much rest and relax. Do whatever you can to relax (read, bathe, etc.) as this does help you body to letdown. You still may need to supplement but you should continue to pump as this makes the body feel as if the baby is needing more milk.

You can increase your milk. Personally, I've never had the need to increase my milk--I sometimes feel like a cow, I produce so much milk. LOL However, there are some things that will help. I would suggest calling a local La Leche League. They can give you some advice. I know there are supplements you can take and after 24-48 hours, your milk usually increases. You can also do the skin to skin technique w/your LO while home with her. That wasn't much help, was it? I'm sorry--I really would call your LLL though, or a lactation consultant. The hospital I use has free breastfeeding advice. Their website is bronsonhealth.com and then go to the breastfeeding center. HTH
