I want to get a carseat for my 2 year old that is comfortable for a long car ride coming up. I can't spend more than $100. Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went to Walmart and purchased a $70 carseat by graco. He was so excited to get a new seat- and so far he is very happy with it. Plus I have peace of mind that he is more comfortable. We leave on Thursday, hopefully things will go as smooth as possible! Thanks for all of your input!!

I have the Graco Comfort Sport carseat for my son and we have been on 2 very long road trips using this carseat. First to Albuqueque, NM last summer and then to Keystone, CO this past winter. Both times my son seemed very comfortable.

One thing that you can do to make the trip easier on your child is when you stop to eat, choose a place that has a playground and get your child's food to go. That way your child can release some pent up energy while you and your husband eat. Then your child can eat in the car. Something that I have that is great for eating on the go is the taby tray from www.onestepahead.com . It attaches to any carseat and has a place for a drink and snacks. It also gives your child a hard surface to color with crayons or play with playdough during the road trip. Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun on your trip!!!

I got my son a booster seat when he was 2 (he was big for his age). He's still in it at 4 (48" tall and 60 lbs.) He loved it because he could move around a little better but it also reclined (when you reclined the seat), something his car seat would not do. It also had two cup holders (really cool when you're little!!)

Walmart has several to look at online, but boosters also come in two kinds. The kind you use with the included harness and the kind that you can use with the seatbelt. It did take a couple weeks for my son to stop messing with his seatbelt. You might want the harness one for a long trip.

My son has the Graco High back Turbo booster and loves it. It's also really easy to take the covers off and clean in the washer!!! And, it comes apart so you can just stuff it in a duffle bag for the airplane too.

There is another Cosco carseat that you can get at Wal-Mart for about $90. It's a great seat because you can make it sit up straight or recline (great for naps on those long trips). It is also super-easy to change the height of the straps (no re-threading necessary), and it can be used as a booster once the kiddo is over 40 pounds. I can't find it online, but I've seen in it the stores recently (looking at carseats for my baby who's ready for a front-facing seat). It's what both of my older kids have used, too.

I have one that's an Eddie Bauer that my father in law got me at Sams Club. It's like a little kids captain chair. My daughter loves it, and I believe it retails for $80. She has ridden in it from Corpus to Jacksonville, FL and from Corpus to Maine, with very little complaining. The sides are exaggerated near the head and comes with a pillow. There are two cup holders built into the seat, and the arms move up and down. I also have a cheaper one I got at walmart that I spent $50 on and she seems to like it, but I have yet to use it for a long trip. It's a cosco and it comes in a zippered bag instead of a box. (sorry I don't remember exactly what it was called) Good luck, I know how hard it is to find that perfect seat for such picky buns. :D

Walmart is a good place to purchase this as far as costs go...also if you do so online you can oftem find online only deals and have it shipped to the store nearest you for free rather than directly to you at a cost...

Good Luck, and have a safe trip with your child... ;-)

I have 2 recomendations.

#1 is the Cosco Scenara http://www.amazon.com/Cosco-Scenera-Convertible-Seat-Dais... (i'm using amaxon links because they always have good info and pictures - but you can easily pick this seat up at Walmart for about $5-$55)
Which is the safest seat available for under $100, and is also one of the easiest to accuratly install in just about every vehicle. Especially if you have LATCH available in your vehicle - the scenara will giove you a good, secure installation without a lot of time/huffing and puffing/trying and retrying.

#2 would be the Graco Comfort Sport http://www.amazon.com/Graco-Comfort-Sport-Convertible-Dom...
depending on where you get it (I think they have it at Target) it will run between $60-$80.
This seat has more EPS foam which is great in the event of a crash, and also has extra cushioning in the bum area, and a softer cover overall.
There is also a cup holder -which I;m sure you're aware is VITAL for sippycups and 2yr olds on long trips.

However, if your current seat is not outdated, is properly installed and rated for your daughetrs size and weight - you can take the trip in that just fine.
Just make sure the seat is safe, and has a good super-tight installation.
Here's some tips for making a long trip not-so harsh on a 2 yr old:
*prepare her for the trip ahead of time. Talk about where you are going and how it is going to take a long time to get there.
*bring different containers of small, non-messsy snacks (goldfish, grapes, pretzels etc) and dole them out to her 1 container at a time thruout the trip.
*take plenty of rest stops to walk around, have a potty break etc. Sometimes even if there is no rest stop, you can just pull off an exit to get out and look at the scenery.
* have several small and simple toy options - but only give them to her 1 at a time as she grows board of each one. (travel size magna doodle, a plastic figurine - actually a 2inch tall dora and a horse kept my daughter amuzzed for near an hour on one trip - card board books, etc)
*put her in comfortable clothes, let her leave her shoes off, bring a small blanket.

HTH, and have fun on your trip!

you can use the one you got. The main thing is for the sake of all people involed is take a break with driving and walk around a little bit at a rest stop to get the blood flowing again. All my children have been stuck in their car seats for long periods at a time longest trip was like 17 hrs. and all we did was take breaks and walked around. they were fine with their safety seats.
