Hey Ladies,

I just booked a family trip to the beach and realized one small detail. My soon to be 1 year old hasn't been in a pool let alone the ocean. My parents have a pool in their back yard and I'm trying to find out if anybody knows of a baby swim instructor that would come to a home pool to teach Allyson or should I do lessons. If lessons is the way to go, can someone suggest where to go in the Round Rock/Pflugerville area?

Thanks,

PBO

What can I do next?

Round Rock Rec - Clay Madsen - has swim lessons going on btwn now and then. (www.roundrocktexas.gov) click on recreation, then clay madsen - you can view the schedule online.

My little ones loved these classes! Its a mommy (or daddy) and baby class, so you'll get in the water together (FYI) and it's indoors now until late May/early June.

BTW, my both of mine were swimming before 2(by that I mean I could let them go and they could swim to the edge of the pool and hold on, or swim to another adult approx 6 feet or so away - they're not like competing in the Olympics or anything! lol!) and I credit that to these classes. I thought the instructors were great and the games we learned in these classes are still played in our bathtub each night! :)

I took my son to the Florida keys at 11 months old and he was terrified of the ocean. (namely the waves crashing on the shore) I think that starting your one year old in swim school is a great idea. I have heard nothing but great things about the Emler swim school. Good luck and have a great vacation!

I would contact Stayci Roznovak - in Taylor, Texas. She is an excellent swim instructor. I used to teach for years - you probably will not get her swimming by May - but one thing for sure - the best prevention is to teach her to be able to survive if she fell into a pool. One thing for sure is that you are doing the right thing by getting your little one swimming lessons.

Hi! We took our son to the YMCA last Summer for swim lessons - he was 2 years old then, but they have classes for 1 year olds too (actually, I think it's the same class). Call your local YMCA - we live just South of Round Rock/Pflugerville. Our son was a little scared at first - I think he realized the pool was a lot bigger than the bath tub, but you hold your child the entire time (it's a parent/child class) and you get them comfortable with the water. My son loved singing the songs at the beginning and end of class and they play with toys. It was a lot of fun and every time we drive by the YMCA, he's asking to go back to swim class. Obviously, he can't swim on his own yet, but the class taught him to kick his legs and move his arms (while we hold him). I highly recommend it!

Swimming lessons are a great idea but a child that young will need constant , constant monitoring anyway and the waves at the beach are so different from a pool they can knock a little one right over. Now have 2 teen boys that were born and lived on an island for years, so lots of experience...take lots of shovels, buckets, etc and enjoy this phase of sand digging. It can still be very fun, just different. It will be gone before you know it:).May also want to take a little shade devise.

Hi P.,

I just wanted to let you know that swim lessons for babies under the age of 4 is kind of a waste of money. I tryed swim lessons with my Daughter from 6 months to 10 months and she hated it. Everything I read after that little stint says swim lessons are a waste till a child is about 4y/o because they don't understand the concepts. I'm not saying its a bad idea cause some of the other babies in her class did great but for me it was very stressfull for my daughter and me. We both would rather just bop along in the water together.
If you want to try it I used the Star Fish Swim School. Very good group and very well trained in teaching kids. Again it didn't work for us but you may have better luck. Heres a link to a Starfish school here: http://www.kidsfirstsports.com/swim.htm
Good Luck.

HiPam, Allison probably will not swim by May. I'm S., mother of 4 . Older 2 are mid 30's and younger 2 are 18 and 20. First of all- take a deep breath, it will be OK. There are swimm lessons for infants at most YMCA or YWCA locations and they offer swim lessons for all ages. At 1 swimming isn't the issue, being comfortable inthe water is.There are several water safety items for little ones, usually based on weight and age. The most important thing to remember is for you or you husband to keep a hand on the baby at all times and watch for signs of being cold,( shivering or crying)and remove them from the water to warm up. 2-3 minutes may be enough to begin with. Good luck. Have a good time. S.
