Things like this is why I prefer the doc to give a shot for strep and not have to mess around with the other meds - it's a much faster way to get antibiotic to fight the stuff and gets the job done faster!
Hi Moms,
My friend is claiming she got strep throat from my 8 y/o son shortly after seeing him. However, when she saw him, it was already his 7th day of antibiotics. My son's doctor told me that he was only contagious for the first 24 hours, so I don't see how my friend could have caught strep throat from my son. While I do admit the timing is ironic, I feel she must have caught the strep from someone else. However, she insists that she caught it from my son. What do you think? Thanks.
My friend was not at my home when she saw my son. We met her at a mall.

OMG! She left her house?!? Doesn't she know the risks involved?!? Please warn her to stay home and indoors so she does not get the flu or West Nile.
I dont think so. I have always heard that once you are on antibiotics for 24 hours you are no longer contagoius. Thats when they let the kids come back to school too!
Wierd that your friend feels like she needs to blame someone! That would massively get on my nerves.
If your son has been taking the antibiotics and not missing any, then she couldn't have gotten it from your son. Your are right, once you have been taking the antibiotics for at least a full 24 hours, then you are not contagious anymore
I would tell her that if that's the case, then why doesn't your whole family, and your son's whole class have it? Further, she wasn't in close contact with him, was she?
Assuming the antibiotics are working, then your friend can't possibly have gotten strep throat from your son. After 24 hours of your son being on the prescription he would no longer be contagious.
If anyone else in your family is incubating strep throat, she could have caught it that way.
If your son was on the right antibiotic and a second culture and/or a re-check by the doctor confirmed he is over the strep throat, uh huh. If he had not been on the right antibiotic, meaning it wasn't working, then yes. Additionally, if you or another family member was harboring the strep bacteria but didn't get sick and exhibit symptoms (some people are carriers only) she may have gotten it from being in your home, but who knows?
Seriously, he can't be the only person she came into contact with prior to contracting it, there's germs and bacteria everywhere! Why is she insistent that she caught it from him, does she expect you to pay for her doctor visit and antibiotics? Tell her you're sorry she's sick but to move on.
what is she gaining by claiming this? what does she want? a pat on the back?
as far as i know, the person is contagious for 48 hrs after starting to take antibiotics. but if she came into contact with your son at your home then she must have gotten in there. if not, tell her hope she feels better soon.
What do I think? She's a germaphobe. Well you asked!
No I don't think she contracted it from your son. There are a lot of sore throat viruses flying around right now in the general population. What good does it do to blame a single person when she could have picked it up anywhere.
In addition there are people out there that are carriers. It does not effect them but they carry the virus. Does she propose an all out witch hunt?
I guess anything is possible but that sounds a bit far fetched to me.
Of course your son was contagious before you got him on the antibiotics but my understanding is 24-36 hours after antibiotics, you are no longer contagious.
Maybe she just wants to blame you for something. What's the deal? Does she expect you to pay her Dr. bill? She doesn't sound like true friend to be so petty over this.
Anybody can get sick, anytime... maybe she touched something in the public restroom, grocery store, who knows.... I think the timing is like you mentioned... ironic.
Not a chance that she caught it from your son. With that being said she could have caught it from something that was still harbouring the strep infection within your house/items (extremely unlikely but still possible). Im not exactly sure on this one but you or another family member could possibly be carrying the germ but not showing any symptoms and she could have come in contact with that but I think this is just total coincedence that she caught strep at the same time as your son
Strep is all over . . . that's a bit ridiculous on her part. If you purposefully foisted your child on her when you knew he was sick, that's one thing. But 7 days out on antibiotics - I'm skeptical.
Most of the time it's the terrain, not the pathogen imho.
Anyone in your family could have contracted strep and be a carrier. They don't even have to be currently having symptoms. BUT she could have gotten strep that day from picking up any item with a hard surface that had been touched by someone with strep.
I have had a sore throat this week, so has my hubby. Our granddaughter was in the hospital for a week with strep last summer and she nearly died. Her tonsils were touching and the left one had pushed the right one out of its way. The hole in there was so small my pinky would not have fit through it.
The pediatrician had never seen a case of strep this bad, he tested her at least 2 times for Mono. Then he had her on Rocefrin via IV drip. She didn't get better and still tested positive after a couple of days on the antibiotic. Her strep was a virus, a virus is not effected by antibiotics.
The doc could also have given your son the wrong antibiotics and the strep was still present.
There are many ways to get strep. Whether your son gave it to her or not. It doesn't matter and you should tell her so. If he was on an antibiotic and got better then I would have assumed he was over strep too.
She did not get it from your son; however, she could have gotten it from you or someone else in your home that she saw at the same time (even if they didn't/don't have strep). Sometimes, you could have it and not yet know it and some people can never come down with strep but be a carrier. She also could have gotten it from any number of people she came into contact with that may or may not have actually had strep themselves. Because she knows your son has strep, she is naturally making the assumption.
Our doctor has always said 48 hours after starting antibotics and schools typically require the same.
Technically it is possible. My sister once had strep for a month and had to do 3 rounds of medicines. She is a-typical and allergic to penicilin so the dr. said that was part of it. The medicines she was able to take weren't strong enough.
Last year, when my son came down with strep for the second time in a month, our ped put my husband and I on antibiotics too. He said we could be carrying the germs without actually being sick and giving it to our son again. This could have happened with your friend.
Incidentally, why does she care where she got it? You can't go backwards and "un" get it...just move forward and get better.
No she did not get it from him.
