Hi moms,

I wrote yesterday abou my son acting crazy...a totally different person than he usually is. He is almost 3. After taking a very late nap (he has been sick all week and taking naps, which he usually does not do) he woke up screaming hysterically, yelling NO repeatedly stiffening his body, pushing me away, shaking, totally out of control. It happened again this morning when he woke up. He seemed very confused and freaking out again. He is acting totally normal now after 10 minutes of screaming and shaking. My husband thinkis its a night terror...can they happen during during the day if the child is waking up in the morning or from a nap?

What can I do next?

They can happen anytime the child is asleep. Our son had them when he was sick and his fever broke. We did find they only happened when we gave him liquid tylenol. The Dr thought maybe he had a slight allergy to it and we switched to a different fever reducer and never saw another night terror. They sure are a strange thing to go thru.. Our son would wake up screaming, thrashing and begging for mommy, but I was right there trying to hold him and he acted as if he couldn't see me and was pushing me away as if I was a stranger trying to hurt him. He would then get up and go to the light switch and flip the switch up and down and then with this horrible scary face would look at the light and scream that it was going on and off !.. It was true terror to watch him. I was so glad when that was over and done. And then he would be calm and "wake up" for real, and be glad to see me and had no idea what he had just done! But yes, even in the daytime.

Yes.
Or it can be a night mare.
Which at this age they do get.

Just look up night terrors online.
It has to do with sleep cycles, not the time of day per say

Oh yeah. My little sister used to get them all the time... BUT you probably want to bring it up to his pediatrician if it keeps happening.

Hi B.P.,
This happened to our son a few times in the last few years. What we realized was that he wasn't completely awake! He would walk, talk (not always making sense), was confused and sometimes have a mini melt down. And just like you described, it would all end shortly. And it didn't happen often, but it can be very scary. I am no dr., but it sounds like he's not completely awake. And yes, it can happen anytime he's been asleep.
