Hi All,

My husband and I are going camping with the kids for the first time in 3 years. YEAH!.. This will be the first time with my son gluten free. My question is do any of you have a Gluten Free bread that makes good/decent Pie Dies?

Pie Die is made with a case iron pie iron, where you take two peices of bread, butter the outside and put pie filling in the middle. Stick it in the fire and instant personal pie.

So, we used to make them with regular bread, but now my son is gluten free. I was wondering what bread you use to make these?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the help, I was thinking about making my own pie filling simply because it would not have the Dyes in it. We are Gluten free, dye free, chocolate free. I had not looked at the pie fillings yet.

We also make food "pies" like with egg, potatoes and cheese .. or something like that. More filling when you have been out in the open air.

We like Udi's brand or Rotella brand GF bread. I have never made pie sandwiches like you describe, but we have toasted, grilled it (for grilled cheese) and also made French toast with these breads and they are as good as regular bread. You should be able to find either brand at a local grocery that has a natural food section, Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Good luck! Those sandwiches sound yummy!

I second Udi's bread. Tastes surpringly like regular wheat bread, toasts nicely and doesn't crumble or fall apart like some of the old Gluten free breads. Costco also has a gluten free bread. I'm not sure of the brand but it comes in a 2 pack.

Udi's is my least favorite. Glutino and Kinnikinnik both make breads that are softer and probably better for pie dies. I think Udi's would fall apart.

ETA: by the way, if you're doing s'mores when you camp - we found GF graham crackers, but I've discovered GF sugar cookies make much yummier s'mores! Even if we weren't GF, I think I'd be using them!

You can actually make your own GF bread I make one with almond flour and you can also use flax in it, I also make some with GF oat flour and GF oats it has eggs, vinegar, Baking soda and I added cinnamon and vanilla and raisins it was really good. Just google GF bread recipes plus you know you exactly what you are getting. The Pie Dies sound delicious I would use fresh fruit some pie filling has gluten in it.

Instead of pie filling use fresh fruit. Pie filling is just pure sugar .
