Cake Decorating Question

Daughter would like a Tom and Jerry cake for her birthday. Since I cannot find a T. and J. shaped pan, I am having to think of another way to make the cake. I am a little nervous to try to free-hand Tom and Jerry on top of the cake. Is there a way to transfer the outline of a coloring book page to a cake so that I can then fill in with icing?

What can I do next?

You can put the picture you want to use under a piece of waxed paper, pipe the outline on top of the waxed paper in piping gel (Michael's or Walmart has it in a little tub), flip waxed paper over and press lightly. The piping gel will transfer to the top of the iced cake, you can then pipe over the lines in black and fill in with stars (or just ice plain). Just remember that the picture will end up the mirror image so take that into account. Have fun.

Have you tried calling the Cake Carousel in Richardson (maybe Carrollton). They have hundreds of pans that you can rent, and most of them are only $3.00. They may have a Tom and Jerry.

S.,

We just made Curious George cake. I was so afraid to try to draw or even trace it! I printed out a picture from the computer (free clip art) on cardstock, cut it out, backed it with wax paper, and laid it on top of the cake. Then wrote on the cake with icing and drew some icing stripes. I'll send you a picture of it if you want so you can see how it looked. I was afraid it would be weird, but it looked good. One little boy at the party REALLY wanted to eat it, but I finally convinced him that it really was paper! I would recommend printing it on a high quality color printer.

Have a fun party!

With my son's last birthday I put one layer of icing on the cake and then used a toothpick to draw the picture on the cake. Make sure to put the cake in the fridge to set the icing before you use the toothpick. If I didn't like it I would lightly wet my frosting knife and "erase" the mess up. It worked like a charm. Just don't push the toothpick down very hard. Then use a line of frosting to outline your picture and fill in!
