Hey there mammas! I don't even try to think I am a baker, let alone a creative one, so I am here to ask for suggestions.
My daughter wants to make a brownie, cake, marshmellow dessert for her nana's birthday dinner tomorrow!
I love her creativity and would like to make this work. I found a recipe for marshmellow frosting on Rachel Ray, but I am having trouble with the brownie cake idea. Here are my ideas:
1. I would like to use a boxed brownie mix and a boxed cake mix (yellow or white) and swirl the 2 together and bake, but I am concerned that the difference in baking time would make it terrible?
2. I thought about maybe putting the cake mix on top of the brownie mix and baking also, but the whole cooking time variation there too could be a problem...
3. I could just bake each seperate and stack them up, but that doesn't seem as "fun".

ANY SUGGESTIONS????

So What Happened?

I am hungry for cake now!!! Thanks for all the ideas. I espeically loved the brownie, toped with a cupcake idea. I am going to have to try this. I ended up doing this:
Baked 2 9" round yellow cakes and 1 9" round brownie. I cut the top off each cake to make them flat, then layered cake, marshmellow cream filling (the hostess cupcake kind), brownie, or filling, then more cake. I was being impatient and one of my cakes fell apart, but I stacked it on there anyway. Once I pour on the chocolate gnash tonight, no one will notice my oopsie. It will be fabulous!!! I can't wait!!! Thanks again for all the ideas!

I am just going to give you my super easy but super delicous brownie recipe:
1 box of cake mix
1 box of chocolate pudding
2 cups of milk (or whatever the box of pudding says)
1 bag of chocolate chips
walnuts and/or marshmellows are optional
This is so good that it is what I make for my husband's birthday cake.
You just mix it all together and cook it according to the cake mix directions.

Oh my goodness, I hope I'm not too late. (This sounds delish).

Bake a tray of brownies and cool.

Make small cupcakes out of boxed mix.

Cut the brownies into large squares, put on a dollop of fluff and stick a cupcake on top, then top with either another dollop of fluff or a little bit of frosting with a marshmallow on top. It's like a brownie sunday with cake. Yum!

And happy birthday!

Here's a recipe we have with The Pampered Chef, it's Brownie Pudding Cake, my family LOVES it!

Ingredients:
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar divided
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa power divided
3 teas baking powder
3/4 teas salt
1 c milk
4 tabls butter or margarine melted
2 teas. vanilla extract, divided
1 1/2 cups semi-sweet choc chips
2 1/4 cups boiling water

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350. combine flour, 1c. sugar, 1/2 c. cocoa powder, baking powder, & salt in bowl. Add milk, melted butter and 1teas. vanilla; stir until smooth. Stir in choc chips. Spread batter into 9x13 baking pan.

2. In small bowl, whisk together remaining sugar and cocoa powder; gradually stir in boiling water and remaining vanilla extract . carefully pour mixture evenly over the batter in the 9x13 baking pan.

3. Bake 30-35 mins. Cool 15 mins. Add serve warm!

It's amazing how the it comes out like brownie on the top and pudding on the bottom! So yummy served with vanilla ice cream in a bowl!

If you want to add marshmallow, I'd get the marshmallow cream and heat it 30-40 sec. in the microwave and spread over the top of brownie cake when you take it out of the oven.

Hope this helps, enjoy!

This isn't really a cake, but it is supper yummy.

Make a box of browines, according to directions on package.
While still slightly warm but hard on top , spread marshmellow creame over the brownies. Let that set up and then cover with chocolate frosting.

We used to call them "Aunt Kathy Brownies" growing up, because my aunt would make them for us every year when we went to visit her.

If you want to do marble cake with chocolate and vanilla get a either chocolate and vanilla of the same cake mix so you don't have the problem with different cooking times or split the batter from one mix. You can just put half to a third of the batter in a separate bowl with a square or 2 of melted baking chocolate. Pour vanilla batter in the pan then the chocolate in a line in the middle and swirl with a butter knife.

Chocolate and blond brownies layered will work too. I made this as a kid and it tasted really great. But it has to be the same or nearly the same cooking time and temperature. You can try figuring out the math if the bottom layer takes a little longer at the same temperature you could put it in for a few minutes first....but it may not turn out well. If you want 2 layers, cooking each layer separately is probably your best bet.

BTW, I have used just brownies with frosting for a cake in the past. It looks like a sheet cake and tastes better. I also doctor the brownie mix with either extra chocolate chips (half a bag) or 2 squares of baking chocolate (unsweetened or semisweet). It makes more chocolaty and chewy and less sweet brownies. I like the Ghirardelli brand brownie mix best for taste but I like my brownies with a very strong chocolate taste and not as sweet as most mixes. Mixing in nuts and dried fruit is good too. My favorite is dried cherries and pecans but there are many tasty possibilities.

Ok, this sounds like a DELICIOUS Mississippi Mud Cake. It's so easy to make, heavy (LOL) and so delicious. Here's the link. http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,166,145169-239203,00.html
Have fun!! My daughter turns 18 on the 21st of this month & she wants an ice cream cake. This will be the 3rd year we've made one and while a bit time consuming, it's always worth it when I see how happy she is with it.

I don't think you could swirl the two together. I also doubt you could bake together even if stacked.

What about a Texas Sheet Cake? I love that cake(so does everyone else I know hee hee) and it is kinda brownie'ish and still cake'ish... or does she want both cake and brownie. The marshmallow frosting idea sounds yumm-o!

When I make a chocolate cake everyone says it tastes like a brownie. It's so sweet I don't even put icing on it! I might dust with a little powder sugar and serve with strawberries.

us e a good quality box choclate cake mix
large instant chocolate pudding
Miniature chocolate chips

Imake a choclate cake mix according to the box - minus one egg - and then add a bag of miniature chocolate chips and a big box of instant chocolate pudding. Bake us usual. It's simple and comes out like a big, dense, rich, chocolatey brownie. The miniature chips make sure you get little busrts of real chocolate in every bite.

What if you just do a more cake like brownie? I think if you add more eggs it is less fudgey and more cakey, it should say on the box. You could put it in a rectangular pan or divide it into 2 round pans and bake accordingly. You could also just make the frosting and put it on the brownie to look like a cake? I know those aren't terribly creative either, but it sounds like a tall order! ;)

I don't think I'd mix a cake and a brownie together, but I'd mix a chocolate brownie and a blonde brownie together. that way you'll get the two colors of dessert but they will be the same baking time & behavior. I'd be worried that the cake would bake higher than the brownie and you'd have a really hilly dessert.

You can make a more of a cake-like brownie by adding one more egg. Directions are usually on the back of the box. If it not tall enough then stack them.

Have you thought of stacking them with the marshmallow frosting in between?

If your daughter will compromise maybe make these chocolate chip cookie dough brownies and cover with marshmallow. I just made this last week and it was yummy and very easy.

The stacked approach will seem more fun when you stick 'em together with the marshmallow frosting! YUM! (Just make extra so you have enough for between the layers and the outside!

What about stacking, and then cutting it. You could flip every other one and make a checkerboard? Don't know if that is practical or not, but a thought.
