Ok- so on mornings that I do not have coffee- like today super busy and I didn't have time to make it. I seem to get a headache by mid afternoon. I am not for the most part a soda drinker or anything but I like coffee in the moring. Mostly for the taste- but yes for the wake up too!
Are these headaches withdrawl? Am i truelly addicted to caffeine? How much is enough to cause an addiction?
We do not keep soda in the house but friday night is Pizza night so we always have Pepsi- then throughout the weekend ofcourse the Pepsi gets drank. My son also goes to my dads on the weekends and spends the day with him- my dad only drinks milk (with food) and pepsi so I am sure my son drinks 2 or more a day there. Monday mornings he is grumpy (i figured it is just because it is monday) and will complain of a headache or not feeling well sometimes in the afternoon(he calls from school) or when he gets home. Is this withdrawl as well? Tuesday and the rest of the week- he is fine.
Thanks for your help :)

Are you drinking enough water? When I was teaching I would get headaches in the afternoon because I had been too busy in the day and forgotten to drink enough water.

Hi J.,

Caffiene actually constricts the blood vessels (primarily in the head) so when you don't have the caffiene (withdrawal), then the blood actually flows faster through the vascular system and causes a "throbbing" in the veins, that causes the headache. I just gave up coffee for a product that brews like it. It's called Teechino and it gives a natural energy lift without the caffiene plus it does not cause any acidity in your body (cancers grow in acidic environments). It's also healthy for the digestive system. My husband hates it but I like it better than coffee now. My "pick me up" is not always necessary, but very welcome!

God bless!

The headaches may certainly be a minor withdrawal symptom, or it could be your body is sensitive to the caffeine. Caffeine can mess with how large the interior of the blood vessels, so if you drink the stuff too quickly or if you call it quits abruptly, the blood flow in your brain dramatically changes and brings on the headaches.

Substance addiction is only truly an addiction if you are unable to function without it, yet having it is having a major negative impact on your life, like if you had to have someone else care for the kids while you're recovering from your weekend binge, or if you chose to take money for your child's needs to get said substance. Unless you're doing stuff like that I wouldn't say you are addicted to caffeine, just adjusting to it getting out of your system.

The amount of caffeine for withdrawl does vary from person to person. some people are "addicted" easier than others. Yes, people DO get caffeine headaches from withdrawl. I've always recommended cutting back gradually if the headaches are too severe. Your body adjusts gradually to not having as much caffeine.

A cup of coffee a day should NOT constitute someone who ends up w/ caffeine withdrawl headaches. Do you get headaches if you don't eat? Some people do. I get stomach cramps if I don't eat. Your body has ways of telling you "ADDRESS THIS! SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT"....and that can be everything from pain to cramps to jitters, to dizziness, etc.

FYI, there have been recent studies showing that just 2 sodas a day can increase pancreatic cancer by as much as 87% and kidney dysfunction and failure by up to 80%. If you want more info on this, you can start by finding it on THE DOCTORS website.

There are just FAR more reasons NOT to drink sodas than there are to have them. Sugar slows down the immune system and I know from personal experience at home that if Abbie has sodas at her mom's during the week before she's here on the weekend, she has constipation problems. I'm sure there are more factors than that, but I can assure you, and so does Abbie, that when she doesn't drink sodas, regardless of what else she has, her constipation problems are far less severe.

I have a sheet of info about soda vs. water that I give you clients. If you have a fax machine or want to send me your personal e-mail, I can send it to you.

Caffeine withdrawal always causes headaches. I've been told if you have a headache to drink a cup of coffee and the caffeine will get rid of it. It does something to the blood vessels in the brain. I have a friend that was addicted to Mountain Dew because it has alot of caffeine. I'm not allowed to give my grandkids any kind of pop at all.

The primary symptom of caffeine withdrawal is headache. If you try to get off a heavy habit, it can take up to 2 weeks for the headaches to subside. While "addiction" is probably too strong a word (unless you simply can't bear the headaches and MUST have caffeine to ease the pain), you do have something of a dependency or habituation.

The good news is that caffeinated or not, coffee has recently been shown to have clear health benefits. Here's one link for more details: http://www.health.harvard.edu/press_releases/coffee_healt...

Yes they are withdrawals. THey get worse if you drink more. I was consumed by caffeine in my 20's and the withdrawals were horrendous. Grumpy doesn't even cover it. My hubby is unbearable if he missses his coffee and sometimes doesn't even realize it.
I went cold turkey. It was hard, but all I drank and ate for long was Pepsi. Fortunately the symptoms dont' last to long if you are only drinking one or two a day.

Caffeine is a diuretic. Some of the headaches you talk about may be from dehydration. Its the kind of like a hangover, you get dehydrated so you get sick feeling and headaches. Especially if you are not a regular caffeine drinker. Definitely need to drink lots of water to counteract the effects of the dehydration. Most of us don't drink enough water each day anyway. I carry a 16oz water bottle with me and my goal each day it to drink a minimum of 2 full bottles. I am not a regular caffeine drinker and I have noticed when I do drink a lot of soda I sometimes don't feel well later on.

Coffee doesn't only have caffeine, it also has clorogenic acid in it. You can look this up online and see what it says about it.

I am NOT a coffee drinker, so when I do have a rare cup- the next day I am unable to control anger outbursts.. I do not drink it anymore for that reason alone.
