C-section Incision Bleeding?

How long is "normal" for a c-section incision to bleed? A friend of mine is still bleeding after 7 weeks. Her OB-Gyn has insisted that's perfectly normal, but it doesn't seem right to me. (She said it's dark red, and bleeds enough that she has a panty liner over the part that is bleeding.) Any advice? Thank you.

Something is wrong. I have had 2 c-sections and neither incision bled after I left the hospital. In fact, when they discharged me they told me to contact my doctor if there is ANY discharge coming out of my incision.

Hi D.-

I have had 3 c-sections and I have never had that experience. I've never even bled once I have left the hospital (I don't recall the scar bleeding in the hospital either.) Maybe we had different types of stiches. She may want to call and get another medical opinion, or maybe even call the hospital where she delivered and talk to someone in Labour & Delivery maybe? Her Dr. is very likely correct, but I'm with you, it does seem a bit too long.

I had two C-Sections and never one bled through my incisions. I wore panty liners over my incisions as well, as I was instructed to do but only for a couple of days after the c-sections. It was more just to keep it protected. I don't remember ever seeing any blood, old or fresh. I would get a second opinion immediately. Good luck with your friend.

Advise her to see another doctor. That doesnt sound right. I have had two c-sections. the last one when i was 30 AND i am diabetic - which means slower healing for most. however. i didnt bleed beyond a couple of days. I have also had many surgeries. the last when i was 41. it was for ovary removal - i was older AND diabetic it took a day or two to stop bleeding. i did ooze 'stuff' and it became infected BUT not blood like that. I would see another doctor, taht sounds serious.

a low transverse incision is used in the most critical situations, However the classical incision causes more bleeding, a greater risk of abdominal infection, and a weaker scar.Do you know what type of incision your friend has?bleeding for this long means it has not healed mostly due to infection and it is not normal.

Not normal at all. I have assisted many Cesarean clients and that is unheard of. Remember doctors are not Gods, get a second opinion and RIGHT NOW.

Is it the incision or vaginal bleeding? Incision at 7 weeks, I'd be a little suspicious as well! Vaginally, I bled after my c/s for quite a while.. Maybe 8-10 weeks.. Depends on how much lifting, walking, etc she is doing as well.. As long as it is dark red, it is typically old blood.. Bright red is more concerning..

still bleeding after 7 weeks???!! so much so, that she needs to put a PAD over the incision?! oh, no.....i don't think that's right at all. i had my c-section just 6 months ago & i had NO BLEEDING at all, after i left the hosp. she needs a 2nd opinion ASAP! also, make SURE she is taking it as easy as possible. maybe she's doing too much too soon...?

My c-section scar with both kids never bled. I would definitely get a second opinion. It doesn't sound right.

My advice for your friend, is to find another Dr!! I've had 2 C-sections and my tubes tied and don't remember bleeding after leaving the hospital. The same Dr delivered both my kids and I trust him more than any other Dr. Good luck to your friend!

Hi D., It doesn't sound normal to me. My daughter had a C-section 11 months ago and hers was also dark red, bleeding, warm to the touch and very sensitive to the touch as well. It starting bleeding about 5 days after she was released. To make a long story short, it was found that she had an infection that turned into MRSA. They had to re-open the incision, drain it, clean it and put gauze in it to help it drain. Then she had to go back every day for two weeks to have the nurses change the gauze in the incision. Needles to say it was very painful for her, but ultimately the incision started to close up and heal. After two weeks, I was taught how to clean and change the gauze daily for her until the wound was closed enough that the gauze would no longer fit. It is very important that she go have it looked at again, but another doctor, MRSA is a very bad strain of infection and takes a lot to get rid of it. She should go and take care of it and insist that they put her on antibiotics. Not trying to scare you but it is very important to seek treatment. I am just glad that my daughtes doctor was very much on top of this and the wound healed perfectly. Good Luck
