Buying Good Tires on the Cheap

My little Mazda 6 is in need of a new set of tires. I don't like to spend money unecessarily. Do you have any tips for how to get the best price on a good tire? Are there any specials out there, coupons if you sign up, particular companies that run specials often? I've looked at Discount Tire and NTB website. For the same tire, NTB is running about $20 cheaper per tire, but still, the set is over $500. I do not intend to spend $500 for tires! We do have a giant outdoor flea market here and I've been told I can get the same tires for much cheaper out there, but I want to exhaust all other options before going that route. What do you suggest? How do you savvy shoppers get the best price on tires?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Mechanic Mamma. It is an 08. I looked at the Goodyear Eagle GT. It has a treadwear of 440. They are $135 per tire at NTB. Great news. I got a wonderfully helpful private message that taught me alot about buying tires and a buy 3 get one free deal at Pep Boys, I am now down to $300 for the set! It pays to do your homework!

We called the local people. Bought a no-name-brand tire. A friend of ours said that they were good quality brand of tire for what we needed (driving on a lot of rocks). So call the local guy down the street, then research the brand of tire he sells.

We're looking for tires too, except ours are gonna be $1000! So far Costco has the best price. Check there!

T.,
You are talking about your car, your safety, your family's safety when in that car.

We buy tires from Discount and I buy the high end. My last tires were $1400 for a set ( I drive a high end luxury car so I expect my tires and everything else to cost more)

I willl not skimp on health or safety and I did not waste money on tires. I bought good tires that will last.

Go cheap = get cheap and you'll be buying again sooner than necessary therefore spending MORE $. You may get the same tire at a flea market but hop you get someone who is reliable to put them on, etc so that you are SAFE.

Discount tire has a good warranty program as well.

I wouldn't buy tires from a flea market because they could be old. There is some evidence that tires are more likely to blow out if the rubber is dry rotting. I buy my tires from bjs but you could do Costco etc. They will sometimes have coupons for the set of four. Also they have free rotations and a lifetime warranty.

We get our tire deals in our Wednesday mail and Sunday newspaper. They don't have the same deals all the time so watch your sales. I price shop for tire deals when I need tires. I check both the tire rating and price plus the add-ons like valve stem, balancing, etc.

This last time the cheapest was Sams. (I was surprised!) Costco was over 50% higher than Sam's. Sams had 70,000 mile rated tires for $10 more than Discount tire had for 40,000 miles tires. I have negotiated with Discount tire when they were close. They were willing to discount the tires even more.

Good luck to you and yours.

I wouldnt buy used tires. You never know what you are going to get. Sadly tires are expensive ( we just spent allmost 1k on new tires for my tahoe and we only bought 3 so 500 is cheap to me!) we waited for a buy3 get 1 free sale at discount tire. But we also checked with sams & costco they often have good deals on tires ( just not the big ones like i need)
