Bursting Night Time Diaper

I am a first time Mommy to an adorable happy little 8 month boy. He is a healthy eater, LOVING his solids (3 meals a day) and usually taking three 8 ounce bottles a day now after a recent growth spurt. I appreciate a shedule but am flexible as needs and daily activities change. My sweet boy was getting up once a night (3:30ish) prior to growth spurt (oh how I was spoiled as getting back up two or three times has gotten tiring), and is now consistently up two times a night. The first time is due strictly to an very very full diaper, just soaked, at about 1:00am! Bothersome to anyone. He then wakes again at 3:30 for a feed and I can see that the diaper is again full, yet not bursting. As suggested by my own mom, I have switched to nighttime diapers which are a bit big on him, and making a bit of a difference. I am curious to know, is this a common problem? Will it slow down again now that the growth spurt is over? He gets a snack bottle (4ozs) at 4:00ish, he then attempts to drink more for dinner, gets his solids and then takes a few more ounces just as he goes to bed at 7:00.

What can I do next?

I just want you too know it isnt just your lil man. I think it is boys in general. My fifteen month old can go to bed with only three oz. in him and when he wakes up about 400 for another three he is wet all the way through to his jammies. It is like he holds all the days fluids in until he goes to bed and then just goes crazy while he sleeps. I havent found anything personally that has worked. I have however found ways to stop it from getting on his jams. I put a maxi pad in the front top part around the diaper. And then when i change him with his morning bottle i just leave it normal. Hang in there. Soon enough he will be potty trained!( I realize this is still far off)

[chuckle] I have 20 month old twins and one of them always always always fills his diaper! They both go down at about 7:30 pm. I usually change my "pee baby" when I go to bed at around midnight. And my hubby will change them both in the wee hours of the morning. (He's either working nights and getting home at about 4 am OR he's working days and is getting up by about 5 am!)

He actually doesn't have to change the one twin - but of course THAT twin is a light sleeper and wakes up the moment he hears anyone moving around the house! They both get some milk (4 ozs or so) and some cereal during this diaper change. Then, when I get up at around 8 am my "pee baby" is ready for another diaper change!

Hi K.,

How many ozs. does he take when he wakes up at 1 a.m. for his change, and at 3:30? You may need to decrease his liquids.

You may need to find another way to get him back to sleep when he wakes at 1, but if you can eliminate that bottle, then he might not wake up because he's wet at 3:30 anymore.

Good luck!

It sounds like we are similarly minded about the schedule thing. my sweet son is almost 10 months! here are my suggestions;

slowly increase his feeding during the day to four 8 oz bottles instead of 3. make them closer together so you can fit a larger bottle in at the end of the day. it is better to cut down solids a bit to get more milk at this age because this is where most of their nutrition comes from before age 1. this will help him discontinue eating at night which really isn't needed anymore if he gets it during the day.

switch to cloth diapers at night. they are much more absorbant. we use the bum genius pocket diapers with an extra insert and have never had a leak. we used to use disposables at night but when he started sleeping on his belly it all leaked out the front and made a big mess!

good luck! it's time for more sleep!

My 9 month old son used to wake up wet in the mornings until we switched to the Huggies night time diaper. Now his diaper is always completely full but he is rarely wet, and when he it isn't a lot. Our situation is a little different though. Eli has been sleeping for 12 hours straight at night since 5 1/2 months. He's about 50th percentile for weight and our pediatrician has never been concered about him not waking to eat during the night. It might be worth considering if he really needs to wake at night to eat. I've had some friends cut out night time bottles by going from 4oz to 3, then 2, 1 and none. You could also try doing this to lessen the milk his is drinking with dinner and before bedtime. I don't really have any other advise since we were lucky enough to have my son stop waking at night on his own.

We've used the 7th Generation diapers at night (all night) since about 2 months and have never had leakage problems. (We use cloth during the day, but he'd just get too wet in them at night.) Our little guy is 11 months, about 25-26 lbs and now in the Stage 4 diapers. At 8 months he was getting 6oz about 5-6 times a day... maybe those extra 2 oz at a feeding makes a difference? We also did a dream feed around 10pm for several months... that usually prevented him from waking and crying during the night. Good luck!
