Yes, you burn more calories on an incline because your body is working harder to "climb".
ok ladies, my DH and i are in a debate. I asked him if walking at an incline on your treadmill would burn more calories and he said maybe a few more as if you were walking, but it would for sure give you sore calves. LOL
So i said well it would burn a lot more calories depending on how long you walked at an incline and what level of incline because obviously your heart rate would go up therefore burning more calories. i mean, you burn more calories when you run vs walk, because your heart rate goes up... right?

yeah kristen w, not sure i agree with that either. i agree that it does matter the distance you travel but the harder you work the faster your heart rate increases. that is the key thing. to get your heart rate up so you can have enough oxygen flowing throughout your body to burn the calories at a constant. if you jog 10 min at a rate of 6mph, you would burn about 151 calories vs if you walk that same amount of time at a speed of 3mph you would only burn 113, so yeah big difference there! thanks everyone for your input!

This is what I've read, although I'm not sure I believe it.
It's the distance you travel that burns calories, not how hard you work to get there. So running a mile or walking a mile burns essentially the same calories, no matter how much harder your heart is working while running. The same concept would apply to the incline, except the incline might add a miniscule amount of distance in real life (not on a treadmill).
That said, working your heart more results in better cardiovascular health, which would result in better overall fitness. And walking an incline might result in greater muscle workout and an increase in muscle mass. More muscle helps your body burn more calories. So, over a period of time, the incline might help burn a few more calories.

I think an incline burns more fat and builds muscle. Muscle in turn burns more calories.
