I am considering a bunk bed for my 6 year old, but don't know where to begin. I see IKEA has steel and pine beds, but not sure how sturdy those are. Anyone have any experience with bunk beds and recommendations (or things to avoid)?

G.,

You can go to the Ikea store & look. They usually have items on display.

Can't make a recommendation on bunk beds. Haven't had one since I was 9 years old.

I actually have the wood bunk beds from IKEA(think they are called HERMES) and have had them for about 3 years now. I have never had any problems with them and my son loves his bed very much!

I got my kids (two girls) a bunk bed from Pier 1 Kids and it is great. Too bad the store has closed, but it is a white wood bunk bed and very sturdy. I would say that when shopping for a bunk bed you should personally climb up there and test it out, if you feel comfortable up there then it should be fine!

I am now a grandmother and have had bunk beds for my children and grandchildren. First of all your children are young and will be climbing up and could fall and get seriously hurt. You know how children play around and get hurt. A freind of mine's son was 6 years old when he fell off the top bunk and was in the hospital for months. He did eventually completely recover but IN THE BEGINNING THEY WERE NOT SURE HE WOULD RECOVER WITHOUT SOME PROBLEMS.

DO MAKE SURE YOU GET VERY STURDY ONES AND USUALY THE WOOD ONES ARE THE STRONGEST. MAKE SURE YOU SHAKE THEM TO SEE HOW STURDY THEY ARE IF YOU DECIDE TO GET THEM.

DO A SEARCH ON HOW DANGEROUS ARE BUNK BEDS AND YOU WILL SEE THEY ARE VERY DANGEROUS.

GOD BLESS,
GRANNY D.

Check out Flexa . I got bunk beds there and they are so fantastic. A bit pricey but extremely well made .There is no comparison to Ikea, its on a different level of furniture making. We LOVE LOVE LOVE ours :) Happy shopping !

We made the mistake of buying really nice beds for our boys when they were about the age of your boys. They beat the heck out of those beds and they are now scratched up and don't look so nice anymore. My suggestion would be to buy something that is maybe in the "middle". You obviously want something that is safe and sturdy, but you don't want to spend too much money on something they may beat up.

I love the stuff they sell at Ikea. If you get a set that is solid wood, they are very good and if anything needs to be fixed later, wood is easy to repair. If you go for a metal set, metal is sturdy, but it is cold and unforgiving to bumping your head on it during sleep or play. If the metal bunk bed parts ever break or get damaged, they are too hard to fix if they are fixable at all. If you have a boy, you can plan on having to fix things.

Hi G.,

I have the smaller pine bunk beds from IKEA. They are lower and it made me feel safer. They are really good. My boys have had them for about 1 1/2 years and I shake it every now and then to be sure the screws are still all secure because they like to jump around on them a little and jump off the steps. I love them and so do my boys. Also, the mattresses from IKEA hold up really well, we have the foam one on top and it still looks new. The bottom bunk is just a regular mattress. We have another bed from IKEA and that has the foam mattress. It is about 2 1/2 years old and the mattress also looks like new.
Hope this helps!!

Forgot to say, my boys are 6 and 7.

Hi, bunk beds can be tons of fun, but one thing to think of is that new stuff is riddled with chemicals and off gasses with formaldehyde. some places tell you they are below the toxic level but frankly is there any level that's ok? A great suggestion is to check out some local thrift stores for some sturdy real wood bunk beds and at a great price. In addition to lower cost, you are giving your money to a worthwhile charity of your choice. During the holiday season people donate more b/c they get a tax deduction before the year ends, good time to check stuff out and save on the environment from buying new.

We are looking at bunk beds too, so I don't have any recommendations for you yet, just something for you to consider when purchasing. We discovered that a lot of the bunk beds we were looking at COULDN'T come apart to be used as two separate beds if we wanted. We are going to have our boys in one room for now, but might separate them in the future and want to have the option. Just something to think about - I was surprised that many don't come apart.

we bought a bunk bed at Ikea a year ago for my son who was 5 at the time. Love it. Very sturdy and mattresses are great. Ours is a double on bottom and twin on top. We moved and it wasn't too hard to disassemble and put together. Good luck!

I would say, if you do get a bunk bed, be sure to get a sturdy set. Really give them some good shaking in the store and examine how they fit together. Make sure they have some sturdy rails for the top bunk.
Also remember that kids will have a tendency to jump off things.

Eventually, as the kids get older, you may end up taking one down and then just using one of the twin bunks by itself. So that is an option.

If saving room is not an issue, you might consider one with the full bottom size bunk and a twin top bunk, so as he gets older he will have the option of a bigger bed.

Hope those thoughts, help.

G.,
I'm getting my kids bunk beds too, I I'm using craigslist.net
If you're not familiar with it, it is where local people sell their used items and you call them or email to arrange pick up. I have purchased and sold tons of stuff on there and saved thousands! Good luck

Hello, we have the bunkbeds from Rooms To Go, they are the medium pine color, they are so neat, they come with a desk that has 3 drawers on one side of the beds, and they also have 4 drawers on another side of the other bed plus 2 shelves, and a ladder. You should check them out on there web site, there a little bit pricey about $999.00, but well worth the price.

My sisters had a pair of good, sturdy bunk beds growing up. They were made out of wood and held up well, but they had one big problem. They were purchased when my sisters were small--like your son--but as soon as my sisters got a little older, they became too tall to sit upright in bed without bumping their heads. I would make sure that your son's bed has enough head room to let you sit down on the bottom bunk comfortably if you're planning on keeping them for a long time.

Definitely avoid IKEA! It is junk and there is no way I would trust any of their furniture with my children's safety. See for your self on the consumer complaint and safety recall sites. Complaints.com ConsumerAffairs.com.

I got the bunk bed from IKEA for my 5 & 2 year old. It's the one that is pine, and the bottom bed's mattress is on the floor. The bottom bed is great for young ones (for my 2 year old) cause I don't have to worry about her falling off the bed. The top part has an optional tent you can purchase for it. I got the tent, and my 5 year old loves it! Both kids slept in my bed until we got this bunk bed, and now they love sleeping in it. I had no problems at all transitioning them to their own bed. The bed itself seems to be very sturdy. It took my brother and husband about 2 hours to put together though...but didn't bother me any :-)

We bought bunk beds from Kids Rooms to Go this past August and have been very pleased with them so far. It is very sturdy. We went with the full size on the bottom and twin up top, it also has 2 HUGE drawers underneath. They had a pretty nice selection, so I would definitely suggest checking them out.

Got my daughter's bunks at Rooms To Go. There is a built in desk on one side and shelves built into the other side. Her's was shaped like a T where the bottom bed stuck out, but when we moved a few years ago she decided not to use the bottom one so we put it in the attic and now she has more space in her room and a reading area under her bed. I know that doesn't help you because I assume you want your 6 and 3 year olds to share the one bunkbed. Anyway.... I bought the bed before we had our 3rd child and now I worry constantly that our 3 year old will fall while climbing up/down his sister's ladder or will try to jump from the top bunk to the floor.

Have you considered a trundle bed instead?? You can roll away the bottom bed and both beds are close enough to the floor not to worry about someone getting hurt
