My son (10 yrs. old) was hit with a baseball in the collarbone area while warming up for a game 2 1/2 weeks ago. We took him to the doctor's two times with xrays being taken both times that showed nothing broken or fractured. Just yesterday he returned to playing on the field after my husband worked with him throughout the last week and my son feeling better. However, the bump still remains there, even after giving him motrin. Have any of you ladies had experience with this? How long does the bump usually stay? Thank you for in advance for your advice.

Hi, W.;
I don't know how to medically explain it, but if the doctor is not worried, I don't think you should either. My son got a broken collar bone as he was being born, and the bump on it is still just barely detectable. He is 17!

Your son may have a "bone bruise". They can take longer to heal than bruises in muscle tissue. It is also possible that the bruised tissue may be calcifying. I fell on my head very hard when I was a child and I've had a distinct lump in that location ever since. Neither condition is a problem unless the lump is so large that it interferes with normal use of the body.

Take him to a sports doctor. They usually are up on these kinds of injuries. This does not sound OK - after this long it seems that it should be gone. Good luck.

Hi, W.! It sounds like he received a bone bruise. There is a protective covering over our bones, known as the periosteum. It's very thin and if the bone is hit hard enough to make it bleed, the blood is held beneath the periosteum, causing a bump that takes a long time to go away. It may be there for a month or more, but it is not serious, just a little painful and not too pretty. But it should go away on it's own as the body absorbs the bruise. Good luck and try not to worry, since the x-rays showed no bone damage.

My husband got hit by a ball at a grizzlies game a couple years ago on the forearm and he had a knot that looked like the baseball was inside his arm for a couple months.

My brother has played baseball his whole life and he has experienced simular injuries. It sounds like it could be a knot.My brothers knot like the ball was actually in his arm.I would just watch it over the next few weeks. And if it dont go down call his doctor.

When I was young, I hit my arm on a wall and got a bump on the soft inside of my arm. It was a bluish lump that did not hurt. Later in life I had it removed; it was a cauliflower looking piece of fat that I wish I'd left in.

I have had some experience with broken collar bones in the past and the doctors saying they were not broken. The bump is usually scar tissue from the bone healing because it was broken. The bump will not go away completely, if the bone was fractured it will have a bump on it where it healed premanantly. I would have him take it easy for a few more weeks. Make sure he doesn't rough house or fall. Good luck. Some times it doesn't show up in xrays.

I highly recommend looking into the homeopathic remedy ARNICA. I use it regularly for all traumas to the body and it is great for helping the body heal and recover more than anything else I have ever used. It is safe with no side effects & in my opinion should be in every purse, car, and medicine chest for treatment of kids typical injuries. You can google information about it to do your own research - but be sure to look into the homeopathic version of it. BOIRON makes a good one that you can find at any natural store in your area. Using it topically and internally can produce amazing results in those difficult to heal injuries. Good luck.
