Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for a safe bug/mosquito repellent to use on my one year old daughter. Does anyone have any suggestions? Anything I need to avoid? I've been hesitant to use anything up until this point, because I'm afraid of her getting it in her mouth. Thanks for everyone's help!

What can I do next?

We use Bug Mace- it is all natural, repels ticks as well, it is deet free and it works! It is relatively expensive, but worth the $15. You can buy it at bugmace.com if you're interested. Good luck!

There is a bug lotion by Jason called Quit Bugging Me. It's safe to use on the young ones! There was a recent post about this very subject and there were lots of good ideas. You can look in the archives to find it.

I've heard that Citronella oil is a good substitute for DEET. Avon sells some family friendly bug repellent that is deet free and uses Citronella instead. Not as effective as deet, but works if you keep applying.

Also, you might want to consider investing in a bug fogger (about $25) and spray on those bad nights when your little one will be outdoors gettin bit up. We do this at our cabin and it works GREAT!!!

I recently read that it is safe to use bug repellent that has less than 10% deet on children older than 2 months old. They make wipes that might makes it easy to avoid eyes, hands and other body parts you don't want covered.

They also make repellents for clothing some are sprays and some are liquids you soak the clothes in. This is good because it's not actually on their skin.

Burts Bees Herbal Insect Repellent works great and is all natural - bo deet, no chemicals. Since it is made up of all natural oils, you will need to reapply often, but it is well worth it. The last thing you want is a 1 year old up all night itching from bug bites.

Hi F.

I know this is going to sound weird, but I just use a Bounce Fabric Softener Sheet for my 3 year old son. We rub it on his clothes and then put it between his shorts and diaper when he goes out and plays. I heard about it on the radio and tried, and my husband and I really like it. That way, we don't have to use any repellant on him :-)

Good luck.

Hi F.,

I was reading your comment about finding a safe alternative to bug spary because you were afraid your little daughter might get some in her mouth.

I don't know if you are aware of this, but most Americans put DEET in there mouth very day. They actually use it to rinse their mouths out and they don't even know it.

Yes, DEET is in Scope & Listerine.

We have a safe alternative. I can e-mail yopur the recipe if you're a melalueca customer. If not, and you'd like to learn more, let me know. Educating moms is my mission!
