Bug Repellent and Sunscreen for 4 Month Old

So I know that neither bug repellent or sunscreen are recommended for infants (although some places do say 5-7% DEET for over 2 months), but has anyone used anything that was safe for infants and that doesn't have to be ordered online. As always, I've waited until the last minute and now I'm not sure if there is anything I can even get!!
***We're going tent camping this weekend in Iowa. I believe they have had some cases of West Nile this year. The land is old farm fields that are being reforested so the trees are still quite young. Hopefully not too many mosquitoes yet!!!

Don't use tea tree oil! It causes skin sensativity to light so it's never a good idea to use it before going directly in the sun, it's not to be used undiluted on children and I don't even know that it's safe for a baby that young.
You can go to a local health food store and buy safe sunscreen for babies. A wide brimmed hat and sun cover up and shade or umbrella go a long way as well.

There was a post about this yesterday too. You can buy a bottle of tea tree oil from wal-mart. (in the pharmacy area ask for it it is usually near the disinfectants) Also Avon Skin so soft is absolutely the best I don't know about babies but it is very mild. Hope this helped.

Hi there!

First of all... WOW are you brave trying to go camping with a baby, let me know how this goes since we thought we should wait til she is 4 or 5 and I am missing it sooooooo badly this year!

When we go camping we first spray down the site where we are going to be with a fogger. We have dogs and my son was a teen but it did not effect either of them. We did the foggers first since I welt up EXTREMELY bad and they always seem to think my son and I are large sweet meals! lol

The other thing I do since I can not stand bug sprays is use the glow in the dark coils from I want to say Off or similair. It has citronella on it and I just put them around my wrist. In your daughters case you can probably put it around her waist as long as you are supervising her to make sure she does not grab and pull it. We also put these on our dogs since it helps us keep track of them and keeps the mosquittos off of them as well!

As for sunscreen, last year right before my daughter turned 6 months we used Baby Blanket with SPF 50+ with broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. I never put it on her face though and used a hat instead. I just put it on her arms and legs. I also never put it on her hands since she has been a thumb sucker since about 4 months or so. Try to use an umbrella if that is possible to keep her in the shade instead! I would also put in a call to her Ped and ask them what they suggest. I know mine is always helpful with things like this!

I really hope you all have a wonderful time making memories camping! Have a Smores for me please!!

Many blessings!

I would check out California Baby. You can get it at Whole foods or order online. They have a whole that is natural and geared towards infants. It is a little pricey, but it is worth it to not put something harsh on your baby's skin. Hope this helps

Hi, you should go to a natural store, Whole Foods is great, or Organica. They have all kinds of sunscreen with no deet and is safe for babies. They also have bug sprays for babies. I also have a 4 month old and will be going to grab some as soon as I get out to actually do it. Look for bug sprays that have citronella in it, then there is usually no deet. Have fun camping can't wait til we go this summer!

I recommend keeping babies out of the sun and not using sunscreen this young. There are many fabrics out there that are SPF materials.

As for bug repellent- check whole foods for herbal versions but I wouldn't even recommend that. Are you going someplace with a high concentration of dangerous bugs? If not-- I'd forgo the repellent altogether

Call your pediatrician on this and if they say sunscreen is okay (normally not until 6 months)- avoid Coppertone. I learned this from my pediatrician who said for some reason over the years he has seen more kids react to Coppertone than any other... and of course, it is probably the one you see most of (and Target copies).

Good Luck!

For insect repellent for camping and outdoor activities, we always used Skin So Soft. It was kind of oily, but it was gentle and kept the 'squitos away! We're also avid campers and have many camping trips planned for the summer with our three kids, the youngest of which is 6 months.
My husband and baby both have extraordinarily sensitive skin, but neither of them have had problems with the Skin So Soft.

We went camping with our son when he was 3 months. It was pretty fun, although getting the sleeping arrangements down was interesting! :) I agree with the Bounce dryer sheets. They really do work. And, the best defense against sun is covering your baby up. Make sure you have a good hat and a thin, lightweight blanket to cover her with. I had my son in a sling, or carrier pretty much the whole time we camped and I would just lay the blanket over him and we had a great sun hat. If you go with sunscreen, just make sure you test it on a small area before you leave to see if she reacts at all. Whether or not she does, you want to make sure that you can wash the sunscreen off as soon as you are done being in the sun. Have fun! Good luck!

HI J.,

I have a 4 1/2 month old, and I'm sorry but I don't have a suggestion for the bug spray except for using a net over your daughter's bouncy seat or pack n play to protect her from the mosquitos.

But, I can help you with the sunscreen issue. I market a plant based product line for parents of children who have very sensitive, itchy, dry skin. In the product line is a sunscreen for babies that is SPF 30+.

The bottle suggests for babies younger than 6 months to ask a doctor. I would recommend you do the same, but my pediatrician said it would probably be ok. I used it last weekend when we went to Ohio to visit family and my son did just fine with it.

I'd be happy to send you a sample of it or send you a full size bottle of it priority mail today...you'd get it in tomorrow's mail. The sample is free, but won't get you through the weekend. The bottle costs $22 plus $4.80 in shipping, so a total of $26.80.

The company does offer a wholesale membership if you're interested in receiving a 35% discount, but I'd personally recommend you try it to make sure you like it before you do that.

Let me know if you want it and I'll get it in today's mail...please feel free to email me or call me if you'd prefer. ###-###-####

www.onestepahead.com has an organic bug spray that has no DEET in it. Also, I know they usually recommend sunscreen after 6 months so I would check with your pediatrician first but Arbonne has an all natural botanically based baby line that I use. It is tear free, gluten free and chemical and fragrance free. It works great on all three of my children and a little goes a long way. Let me know if you want to try it. I can have it delivered to your house. You can email me at ____@____.com

J.-there are many essential oils that you can use which you can purchase now at many drugstores or health food stores. Sunscreen and DEET are 2 of the most toxic chemicals for us. Vanilla or peppermint oils are the best but you have to make sure to mix them with a virgin olive oil. For every tablespoon 2 drops.

Burts Bees, Avalon, California Baby, are excellent choices. Stay away from oxybenzone or anything that says poisonous if ingested.

If you have any questions-let me know.

I spoke to a dermotologist who told me she likes Banana Boat Baby the best. I just bought some. It doesn't say anything about not using it on infants. I would ask your peditrician just to be sure.

As for the bug repellent, I am not sure about the DEET thing. This sounds really weird but I just got this email about how Listerine mouth wash is supposed to be a really good bug repellent. You can put it on a deck or grass around you & the bugs are supposed to say away. I have no idea if this is true or not, but I am going to give it a try!!!

For that age, our pediatrician recommended Avon's Skin So Soft. they have a Deet-free, PABA free product called SKIN SO SOFT BUG GUARD PLUS IR3535® Cool 'n Fabulous™ Disappearing Color SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion.

It was blue and then disappeared on the skin, so you could easily tell if you missed spots.

We got ours at either CVS or Walgreens. You could always call ahead instead of driving there first. :)

No, can't think of anything but go ahead and tell us your husband's age. I figure he's either way older or way younger than you!
My husband is fourteen years younger than me and I have been married to him for thirteen years. Very happily!
I think mosquito nets have been traditional to keep those pests away.

I know this might sound a little corny (I thought so too until I tried it), but rubbing a dryer sheet on my skin was very effective!
We had a bad storm last August that left an infestation of mosquitos in our yard. We had no bug spray, and I remembered reading about the dryer sheets, so we tried it out. To my amazement, it worked wonders...and mosquitos LOVE me!:)

Hi J.,
We use pure vanilla mixed with water (equal parts in a spray bottle). As far as sun screen our dr.said to not use it until 6mo. I would suggest light long sleeves/pants and try to find a shady site. I have also heard about the dryer sheets and mouth wash but never tried it.
Good luck and don't forget to pack your camera!

J. we've always taken our kids camping since they were pretty much new born. When they were little we used Avon's "Skin So Soft". When I thought the buys were too much I would lightly spray their clothing before putting it on them. This way it's not really touching the baby. I would also keep them in the stroller alot, I purchased a netting that can go over the stroller and car seat. It was thin and it breathed easily so the baby woudn't be too hot. I also tried to keep them dressed in long sleeves and pants, just make sure that it's a very thin material so you daughter won't get too hot.

Good luck and have fun!

I know this is strange, but I recently heard that Listerine (the mouth wash) is effective in repelling bugs. I think it was more so used on surfaces outside rather than people (like deck furniture and on the deck ground), but since it is just mouth wash it should be safe to put in a spray bottle and spray on child's clothes and skin. you might want to google it to get more specifics. Hope this might help! Also, although they say DEET is okay, they also warn to wash it off immediately after coming inside, so it makes me wonder how safe it really is. Good luck and happy camping!
