I'd get seen by a doctor...it could be lots of things but one that sticks out for me is bruising related to leukemia
I have always bruised easily. In December I noticed a bruise on my shin (don't remember how I got it )and it is still there. It has faded a but but seems to be getting larger.
I am almost 40 so I attributed it to getting older. I am a healthy weight, exercise 5-6 times a week and eat a healthy diet. Last night my husband said, "that bruise is STILL there?!?" And then I started to worry.
Anything I should look for? I made a Dr appt foe Saturday but in the meantime should I be monitoring anything?
Thanks all :)

When the doctor sends you for blood work, then you will really know. Not sure of your complexion, but pale folks (like me) tend to show bruises a bit longer.
You could have a slightly low platelet count or slight anemia, both could lenghten the tme it takes for something to heal.
I have like you always bruised easily, and some just seem to stick around. I wouldn't worry too much. Right now you would just be borrowing trouble.
Until the Doctor actually says you are not fine, assume you are. It is out of your control anyway.
I will say a prayer for you!
Slow to heal is one sign of hypothyroidism or diabetes.
It could also be a vitamin deficiency.
Having a doctor check it out is a good idea.
Even if it turns out to be nothing at least you'll have peace of mind that nothing serious is going on.
can't hurt to get it checked out. my shins always look bruised due to poor circulation/blood pooling. i'd love to have it 'done' but the procedure is considered cosmetic and not covered by insurance. the doctor assures me it's not a sign of deep-vein thrombosis, and harmless, but i hate it. not just the look (although i hate that too) but to me is a clear sign that something isn't working right and i want it fixed, dammit!

Usually a sign that someone easily bruises is that they are missing a vital mineral or vitamin or enzyme or amino acid in their body. I used to bruise horribly; now that I've been seeing a naturopath and have been taking various supplements to address underlying issues, to include malabsorption and Leaky Gut, I rarely ever have bruising anymore.
It's worth checking out.
I'm 29 and I have a bruise on my arm that has been there since I was 13. I had a blood draw one time, which caused me to bruise, and it just never went away.
Hi J.-
i used to work in coagulation.
There are SO many things that could explain bruising.
I found out I had a mild form of something called vonwillebrands donating for normal testing there- I bruise easy too- and they stay longer. It was insignificant clinically. Common in type O blood and women.
One sign is heavy periods??
It could be as simple as plt count low, or do you take advil, aleve, baby aspirin-- those can all contribute to what you talk about.
It's surprising. Vit d deficiency- common in this region.
Don't think the worst- I see several leads to leukemia. It's good to see a Doc and then you can be relieved and know if you just have a leaking vessel due to something that is easily attended to.
If you happen to get a bleed into your eye- or you see swelling and pain or heat in the region- then I'd go in early.

My mom got hit one by a line drive...right to the shins. Yech, took her right out of the game of course. She had that bruise for two years. It was crazy. She had a doc look at it and he told her it was a deep bone bruise. It stopped hurting her long before it went away.
I agree to have a doc check it out - and for future reference on a FRESH bruise Vanilla Extract (REAL STUFF) or Vicks Vapo Rub help's it go away faster. I do not suggest it on an injury where the bruising is important to tell you how badly you are hurt (doc visit type of hurt), but for an at home treatment it is great to help the process.
