Just wanted to gather some recommedations on breast pumps. I have been told that hospital ones are the best. I should mention that I am expecting twins.

Thanks

I used to work for a home medical company and the best ones ARE the ones at the hospital. The one I recommed is the Medela Lactina Select.

Hi

I have a two month old baby, and I am using Ameda Purely yours Breast pump. I got the one with back pack so I carry it to the work. Just to let you know i used the one in hospital, somehow the ameda works best for me with little pulling. I am extremly satisfied with the pump. If you like see Babycatalog.com, that has this available cheaper than the market. All the best for yr twins!!

I have used a breast pump for all three of my children. I fed my babies only breast milk and I pumped all of the feedings for well over a year. All of my children ate better from bottles, they still nursed, but all meals were from a bottle. (A long story) I got so good at it that I could pump right before a feeding so my little one drank warm milk. The pump allowed me to make more milk and I DID NOT use any pumps from a retail store. I used the services and pumps from ART of BREASTFEEDING. I liked Ameda. I was not a big fan of Medela. Call 411 and it is in Chicago. A wonderful woman and mom came to my house and brought a pump. (I was already engorged and getting sick) You will be prepared because you are going to call and talk/meet with her before hand so you know what you need and have it on hand before your milk comes in. She showed me how to use the pump, store the milk, and take care of me. She was there with extra product when I needed it later and I even had to exchange a pump and there was no problems with that either. She came to me. The price beat formula and it was a really good experience for me and my children. It is a little pricy for the initial start-up but the monthly rental is reasonable. Good luck! Stay away from retail brands, they just aren't powerful enough. However, I did like the Avent hand pump and the Ameda(not retail) brand was good too. It is a lot of work, but it goes by fast. Really, it does! B.

When I had my daughter I went out and got a $50 pump thinking there wasn't much of a differncein pumps. I was so wrong. After 2 months of using the pump and being in pain my husband told me to go and get a good pump. I ended up spending $200 on the new Playtex Deluxe pump. All the pain went away and I actually enjoyed pumping. My sister in law had here second child recently and asked if she could use my pump at school and heres at home. She has the Mendela hospital pump. She ended up using mine at home because she liked it more and it had diffent speeds and suction pressure. sorry for the long story but I hope this helps.

I have the Medella 57000 series- it is older...a wonderful second-hand buy from my neighbor (her daughter is now 7). I just love it. It is electric, you can pump one or both sides at the same time. The suction power is adjustable as is the suction speed. I really really like it. The best part is how effectively and quickly it drains your breasts. Best of Luck

Hi Nicole,

It really depends how much you think you'll pump. Before I had my baby I was told that if I was going to be pumping regularly, I should get a Medela Pump in Style. I decided I only needed tp pump occassionally so bought the Avent Isis. Unfortunately, I ended up pumping full time when my baby was born. I used the Medela pump in the hospital, but found it uncomfortable, sometimes painful. It took ages to get sufficient milk and was messy and fiddly to put together. When I came home, I used my Avent Isis for several weeks before my baby started nursing. It worked perfectly - it was comfortable, easy to use and did the job with no problems. Now I wouldn't consider using anything else. I hope this helps.

Good luck with your twins,

R.

Based on the research that I did, Medela and Ameda make the bext pumps, Ameda is less expensive and mostly sold online. Medela can be found at most retail stores, but is much more expensive. You may want to check out the feeding section of the book "Baby Bargains" that has ratings for some professional grade pumps.

The hospital that I went to used the medela symphony pump. It was great and I would recommend it if you are using it only at home. I purchased the medela advanced backpack style since I have to go to work and pump. It is pretty discrete and works just as well as the symphony.

I would recommend that you go ahead and spend the bucks for your own pump instead of renting one from the hospital. They charge a good bit for renting and within a few months you would have spent enough to own your own.

Hi,

From my experience(I have a one year old boy), the medela hospital grade pumps are the best. I bought one of the first year electric pumps(around $30) when he was around 6 months old to try to store some milk, but found I got more when I used the hospital grade pump.

Nicole,

I have the Ameda Purely Yours pump and I have loved it. It is made by Hollister and I believe is hospital grade (they recommended Hollister to me in the hospital). It is less expensive than the Medela pumps, but performs just as well. I use my pump A LOT and have never had problems with it. It empties both breasts in about 15 minutes. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Nicole, I used the Medela Pump n Style and was very happy with it. I found it on ebay for about half the price. At first, I wondered if that was the best place to get it, but it was new, in package and still carried the warranty. Good luck w/the twins!

I used the medela breastpump which is used at the hospital. You can also purchase at Babies R Us, target and online. I used other hand help cheaper pumps. I nursed both of my children for 1 year each and this pump was the best by far.

The pump (new) runs for about 200 but you can rent from the hospital. The "pump in style" comes in a backpack and the motor is inside, you just have to hook up the power cord and set the suction level.

There's no question that the hospital grade pumps are the best, but they're very expensive to buy, and in the long run very expensive to rent. If money isn't the issue, you can do a couple of things. You can get a great deal(600 -700$) on ebay for a hospital grade pump, or rent one. The cheapest place I found for rental was Home Health Care on Foster. If you have trouble finding their number, email me back, and I'll track it down for you.
The electronic pumps(300-400$ new) work OK, but take so much longer (up to 40 minutes to do both breasts. I switched from hospital grade to electric after 3 mnths cuz of $, and it just didn't keep up my milk supply as well.Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hello,

I loved the Medela Pump In Style Backpack. It was wonderful, and worth EVERY penny. I used it all the time. It is portable so if you go anywhere, you can bring it (I brought it everywhere). All of the Medela products are great. Many other moms have recommended and used this!

Hope this helps and good luck.

Hello there!

I had twins, now going on 5 months ago. I wish you nothing but Patience, Love and Sanity. :)

I also have a 2 year old.

About the pump - for my twins - I wanted to strictly use breast milk. We bought a Medela Pump in Style and I must say that it works very well - but you have to use it ALL THE TIME. I did not realize that I was not going to have the time to pump whenever I should. I suggest that you get your babies to your breast, a.s.a.p. I hope that they are born in good health and that they will latch on quickly.

Back to the pump - I did not use mine. I tried and tried but it just didnt work out for me. I have all the goodies too. I was considering to sell it on ebay or craigslist but wasnt sure if anyone would buy it. Obviously I wont sell it for the price we bought it at; however gently used it is. All attachments can be sterilized. If you're interested, let me know.

In my opinion, it beats spending A LOT of money on an item and you're not sure whether or not it will be used like you intend on using it.

sorry so long.

Hi Nicole,
Congratulations on your twin!
I have 1 boy, almost 2 now. when he was born in Prentice I decided to rent a breastpump because breastfeeding wasn't going smoothly at all. After a week my son finally got the hang of it and I used the electric pump for about 6 weeks. Then I switched to the Avent hand held pump which is, by the way, the best handheld pump. considering your're having twins I would go for a pump for a rental from the hospital first, see if breastfeedings works out and then buy one. I think you can even buy the one you rent.
good luck!
