Breastmilk Imtollerance

I'm not sure if my newborn has a problem with my breast-milk. at first he was fine then he was having some kind of latch on trouble. now he's throwing up what i finally got him to dink. i don't know if it was just because he drank too much (about 5 oz) or if he has a problem with my breast-milk. has anyone ever experienced this?

edit

the five oz was just once through a bottle because i wasn't able to get him to feed off the breast. i was surprised by how much he ate because when on the breast he doesn't drink more than two oz a feeding.

What can I do next?

My dd only drank 2 1/2-3 oz when she was NB too... but she has reflux, and I noticed she also had more issues whenever I drank milk. I cut out milk, and don't lay her flat for the first 30 minutes or so after eating. Most of her issues stopped. :)

My daughter had that iqssue too and rather than buying all kinds of drugs to put her on, I decided to try eliminating things in my diet. Milk was the first thing I tried and within a week she was doing better. It was hard avoiding all milk products but when I saw it helping I kept going. Anything to help out the little one!
While it very well could be something like reflux, I guarantee there are many many cases diagnosed who simply have an intolerance to something mom is eating. Actual reflux in babies is much rarer than people seem to realize.
It could also be something like wheat or soy or corn... but milk was easiest for me and the most logical choice for me.

do you have a forceful let down? If you do, thats the root of all your problems. His poops should be yellow and seedy like dijon mustard. If they are stringy, green, mucousy and look like wet lettuce, he's getting too much foremilk, which will make him spit up, cranky, gassy, and very uncomfortable.

A newborn shouldn't be drinking 5oz! Get him back on the breast, see a lactation consultant if you are having problems latching. Let him latch, and when your milk lets down, unlatch him and catch the spray into a towel. When the major spray slows or stops, let him relatch and nurse until he's done on one breast. Don't unlatch and switch breasts, its not necessary, he needs to nurse one breast per feeding so he gets the hindmilk. He can't grow and thrive unless he gets hindmilk. You are very engorged right now so you may have to nurse ihm on one breast for 2-3 feedings in a row to ensure he gets really good hindmilk. But don't switch breasts, one breast per feeding, and unlatching during letdown until your milk productions evens out a little.

Please find a lactation consultant to help you. He's not having a problem with your breastmilk, its just letdown or not gettign enough hindmilk/too much foremilk.

5 oz sounds like a LOT for a newborn to drink in one sitting...why don't you call a lactation specialist at your hospital? They are very helpful...

Not an intolerance to breast milk but many things it could be. How old is your baby? I'm assuming younger than 3 months therefore should be drinking less than 3 oz per feeding. My daughter also has reflux which started when she was about 2 weeks old. Try feeding less at a feeding if you are bottle feeding. Most important - meet with a lactation consultant. For me she was able to help confirm my daughter wasn't getting too much milk & we needed to move onto a GI specialist.

Sounds like Reflux. Also, 5 oz is a lot! Maybe it's too much. If his stool isn't bloody than it's probably not an allergy to anything you're eating. I'd try Zantac, it's made huge difference for my daughter. :)

Some babies are extremely sensitive to the things we eat. I had to switch to soy milk w/ both of my boys. I had to be careful w/ my first w/ the things I ate. Anything acidic can bother them....juices, sauces, and dairy products. With the second i just switched the milk, and he was good to go. San Antonio hospital has a wonderful breastfeeding clinic. It's free, and the nurses are very knowledgeable everything. I believe it's called Healthy Beginnings. Congratulations!

how old? we had a similar issue plus a scaley rash on his face (not cradle cap) and it turned out to be a dairy allergy. they are most commonly found in weeks 4 to 6 so if you are beyond that and this is the first you've seen of the symptoms, it's probably something else. i went off dairy immediately and the problem (stomach pains, rash, vomit, constant spit up) stopped within 48 hrs. i hope this helps :)

How are you measuring how much he is taking? Are you pumping and then bottle feeding?

Also, not sure how old your baby is, but my 2.5 month old only takes about 2-3 oz of breastmilk every 3-4 hours...so 5 oz at one sitting seems like A LOT! So maybe that is the answer why he is throwing up; his belly is over-extended with too much milk!

Try going to a La Leche League meeting or making an appt with a lactation consultant.

You may have to do an elimination diet for yourself, as you are probably consuming something that doesn't agree with your little one. Babies don't have an intolerance to breastmilk (no matter how many people try to tell you otherwise), but a food sensitivity is a definite possibility.

Do anyof the hospitals in your area have a lactation consultant?? they will usually help you for free and can work on latch issues and weigh the baby as often as you like so you can see that they are getting enough nutrition. I'm sure your baby is not intollerant to breast milk, It is his Natural food. He got all he needed from you when you were carrying him before he was born and your breastmilk is fine for him now.
If you need to google site to help you find how to help in latch on, It's been a while but if you sort of squeeze back behind your nipple so it sticks out and then wait for him to open his mouth wide, he'll get it. If you are pumping that is great too, just remember to burp him well, and at that age he probably only needs a few ounces but he needs it frequently, every few hours.
Hang in there, he'll be eating steak and potatoes before you know it.

if it is intolerance to breast milk, buy on-line from homeopathic pharmacy (not from whole-sale type of place that carries tons of vitamins and other health products) homeopathic preparation of Silica 12C - liquid. Tell them it is for the newborn - they will send it in a bottle that dispenses small drops. give him few drops every time he is awake.
Good Luck

Hi E.. My 6 month old daughter had a lot of issues with throwing up as a newborn. It ended up being a few different things. She was getting too much milk and it let down way too quickly for her. She also had something called GERD. We discovered this by giving her a non-dairy formula for 7 days to see if she was having the same reaction as she did with my milk. Nothing changed with the formula. However, if it had changed, I would have gone on a strict non-dairy diet. He may just have an allergic reaction. My pediatrician always said if she is gaining weight, sge is healthy. Good Luck.

I strongly advise talking to a lactation consultant ASAP. You can get all the help you need. Your OB or hospital should be able to refer you to one. Otherwise, look into La Leche League. You want to make sure you figure it out quickly so your baby is healthy.

5 oz does sound like a lot for a newborn. Was he nursing or was that through a bottle? If nursing, how do you know how much he took?

he could be allergic to something in your diet as well. I hope you're able to get professional help quickly so you can figure it all out.

I hear your concerns and I think they will work themselves out! My second child had similiar issues with breastfeeding. A lactation specialist told me to feed him on one breast at a time, don't switch sides during a single feeding. That way he won't be getting hit with that first big rush of milk, twice! Your breast will regulate to how much he needs/eats. Trust your body. It knows what to do! I also stopped eating all dairy because my son had horrible gas!
As soon as I quit the dairy he was fine and I lost a ton of weight!!!
Good luck with it! Don't give up! Breast feeding is soooooooo good for them!!

Best wishes,

Andrea
