I am currently breastfeeding my daughter for almost 4 months now. For the last 3 weeks to a month I have been waking up stiff and in pain. I thought it was my sleeping arangement and have try different beds, sofa, chair, etc. doesn't make a differance. Now I am waking up at night because of the pain. Last night I took 500mg of Tyleneol before bed and still woke up in the middle of the night hurting all over. I feel like I have slept on a hard floor all night. I am wondering if this has something to do with low calcium level having to do with the breastfeeding. Anyone else have this problem?

What can I do next?

Is it all over your body? Just your breats, etc. You sound as if you have an infection and need to see your doctor. Any fever?

You didn't say exactly where the pain is. I had horrible pain on my right side, (into my arm and down my side and so on) with my son's nursing (my daughter's nursing was problem free). I couldn't figure out what it was. I thought it was a breast infection, but I didn't have the flu like symptoms that comes with it. After seeing all 3 doctors at my ob/gyno office I finally got an answer. It had to do with my sons latch, for some reason he was just latching a bit extra hard on that side. The pain was from an extreme case of nipple sensitivity. I asked the doctor why the pain was so spread, she said since the pain has no where else to go it shoots back up and spreads. I would have never thought something so simple could be so painful, but it was. She told me to put Lansinoh cream, before each feeding to encourage him to soften up and it worked. It's been months and I don't need to use it anymore. No more pain. Good luck

Pain all over or just in the breasts?

Do you have a fever? Feel run down? Any redness or "very full" feeling in your breasts? This could be mastitis, BUT . . .

The fact that it is happening after you sleep tells me that is is probably you needing to see a chiropractor. You are probably very twisted from pregnancy and childbirth and breastfeeding (because of the way we hold our nursing babies and nurse at night) can really make you stiff.

I would find a good one and very soon. Both myself and my son have been adjusted by a fabulous Chiro here in Massachusetts. Made a WORLD of difference!!!!!!

The other thing is your pillows and mattress. A really high quality mattress is a life-saver for a nursing mom. You want to test them out and see which feels the best when you are side-lying.

I have a Simmons BeautyRest King - is has almost 1800 coils and a memory foam top. OMG - could not function without it!

Hi S.,
I had similar problems, a lot of joint pain, and in the morning I could not step on my soles, I needed 2-3 minutes to warm up, and then I was fine. I also had sensitive and painful teeth. When I asked the OBgyn, they said they don't think it is related to breastfeeding (but she was the nurse practitioner actually). But my dentist, who was not educated in the US, by the way, told me that my tooth sensitivity and pain is related to breastfeeding and will go away as soon as I stopped. Once I stopped breastfeeding (at 7 months) the pain disappeared in a couple of months. I don't know what is the cause and I don't have good primary care so I couldn't really follow up on this, but I know I was trying to drink milk and eat cheese to keep up my calcium, also taking vitamins. So, I suggest if you have good primary care to talk to your doctor about that. I stopped breastfeeding because my milk supply started really going down, but if you would like to breastfeed until 1 year old at least, it is better to have something done about it. I hope this is helpful. Take care.
