Breastfeeding Trouble 1 Month Old

My son is one month old and just in the past week will cry and pull at my nipple, and come on and off it throughout a feeding. This has been happening at most feedings. There is one white spot under his tounge...could it be thrush? I am not in pain though. Could it be something I'm eating or over active let down? I'm lost!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great feedback! It wasn't thrush...the dr thinks it's silent reflux. Same as reflux but not spitting up.

The local hospital should have a free lactation consultant hotline that you can call.

But in the meantime, is he getting enough milk? Maybe try pumping to see if you're making enough milk.

Monday, call the doctor's office and see if he needs to come in. I don't know anything about thrush or white spots under tongue.

Definitely get with a lactation consultant as soon as possible. I'd avoid the pediatrician unless yours is breastfeeding friendly and knowledgeable...most of them in my opinion aren't.

I don't know what the issue is, but I have an oversupply problem and both my kids right around the 4-6 week mark did the same thing. I just had a ton of milk and they weren't mature enough to deal with it.

Here is a great link describing it.
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html

My sons' behavior was exactly what the link described.

What I found helpful was to let my sons latch on in the upright position (as if they were standing on your lap). The gravity helped them swallow. I had to do this for a few weeks.

Does your son do this when he is asleep/sleepy? That is one clue. If he does it primarily during the day when he is awake that might be an oversupply indication. when they are actively sucking, they have too much milk, whereas at night, they tend to be sleepy and suck less vigorously and so don't have that issue.

I wish you luck. Don't wait to long. This is an important time to get BF established.

Take care.

It absolutely sounds like thrush. Both my kids had it. I had no pain or discomfort with my older son, but with my younger son I did experience pain with nursing. I would call your pediatrician. If it is thrush it's easy to treat, and you'll both be much happier.

My child did this also. I asked his doctor and he said that it is a reflex that happens around 2-4 months. Maybe your little guy is doing this a bit earlier. I am not sure about the white spot. My son stopped doing this on the dot at 4 months.

Thrush is a yeast infection. Too much sugar. You need to take a natural probotic don't eat any white anything (bread , rice ect) It will go away in about a week. If it's not thrush then it is possible reflux. Check with your doc asap.

Good Luck

Could be thrush. Talk to a lactation consultant or a la leche league mom. Don't give up, though! You can get through this. It is soooooo worth it! I had mastitis with both kids and it was painful but I was so glad I didn't give up!

Let your doc know, they will want to evaluated him for thrush. Also, call the hospital you delivered at - most have a free breast-feeding support group. I had over-active letdown and a lactation consultant at the support group diagnosed it and was extremely helpful in helping us manage it. If it is that, it usually resolves around 12 weeks.

Check with your pedi, and the advice of a lactation consultant could be very helpful.

You need to make sure you have enough milk coming out.
He may very well be trying to get the let-down going, or nothing adequate is coming out....

Next, ask a Lactation Consultant... also make sure he IS latching on properly...

Ultimately, is he having enough wet diapers?
If not, he is NOT getting adequate intake and can get dehydrated... which is dangerous in a baby.
-Do you SEE him swallowing as he nurses? Is he satisfied after nursing...? If not, he is not getting adequate intake...

Call your Doctor.... or page him/her, even on off hours.

Next, a white mouth/tongue can be Thrush... and this can make it uncomfortable for nurse. So you AND he would have to be treated. At the same time. To prevent it from recurring.

all the best,
Susan

Is he arching his back as well?> My son did all of this at one month as well. We took him to the doctor and found out he has acid reflux. Very simple fix, just some zantac and keeping him elevated during feedings. Good luck and call your doctor asap.

It could very well be that you have oversupply and the rush of milk into the back of his mouth is making him cry. Try block feeding which is feeding on one breast for 4-6 hours and then switching. This way he will get more of the hind milk and won't get your milk so fast. Also use a paci to help him calm and swallow (reflux) when he comes off the nipple. Consult your doctor about reflux meds too if it doesn't improve. I had this with my second son and it drove us both crazy until a lactation consultant diagnosed it. Best of luck.
