Breastfeeding new born and mom taking penicillen is it safe? I am nursing my 2 1/2 week old and have a really bad sore throat I tested nagative for strep throat but my doctor perscribed me penicillen anyway. I trust my doctor but was curious if it is safe to nurse and take this medication and exclusivly breastfeed?

What can I do next?

I agree with Dawn.
Every medication has a rating of how dangerous it is/ how much is passed through breast milk. I'm assuming you told your doctor you're breastfeeding and s/he decided it was more dangerous to not treat you than to expose the baby to penicillin, but s/he should have said something about side effects on baby. Call the pediatrician to verify.

Tina, this is a question for your doctor, not for this board. Unless the person answering is a doctor or pharmacist, all you are getting is an opinion or someone looking up the answer on the internet. What did your doctor say? Are you looking for a second opinion? Call your baby's ped, the pharmacist, or the hospital's nursing hotline.

contact a lactation consultant. They know more about infant/mom milk and medicine than the docs do.

You can just call any CVS or any other pharmacy and ask this question to a pharmacist.

Go to Kellymom.com and go to their medication list. They have alot of meds listed for breastfeeding moms and all of the clasifications ABCD meds. so you can tell what is safe vs. not safe. Good luck!

If you tested negative for strep why were you prescribed an antibiotic? They do NOTHING for viral infections! And while it may be considered safe (again ask the Dr or pharmacist), they do put you and your baby at risk for fungal infections (thrush).
I would go back to the Dr and ask why you should take antibiotics if you do not have a bacterial infection. Personally I would not.
I am not against antibiotics, however taking them when not needed contributes to antibiotic resistance in bacteria and they should always be prescribed cautiously.
Talk to your doc about it.
Good luck.

Assuming your doctor is aware that you are breastfeeding, you could also call a drug store and talk to a pharmacist for a 2nd opinion if you want.

Oh wait, you said you tested negative? I wouldnt take it at all then, even if I wasnt breastfeeding.
