My three month old daughter has been having little blood specks in her stool. I called the doctor about it and they said if it happens in her next stool to come in. It has happened one diaper change a day for the last three days. I breastfeed her and already cut out dairy in my diet. She is in great spirits and very smiley and happy. She doesn't grunt or cry when she goes number two. Any advice?

What can I do next?

This happened with my little one also. The doctor concluded that if the blood was red (instead of dark brown or black) and on the outside of the stool it was not from inside his tummy but most likely from his anus/rectum from having a hard time passing the stool. It was nothing to worry about and will pass. Hope this helps.

Do you have any bleeding from your nipples or discomfort? If so she is just getting that along with the milk and passing it through.

I have heard that along with dairy allergies causing blood in stool, soy allergies can. My cousin's baby had blood and she cut out both dairy and soy and the blood stopped. My daughter, however had both dairy and soy allergies and never had blood in her stool at all, so I don't know how reliable that is as a symptom. But you may want to ask her doctor about you cutting out soy as well. I wish you the best of luck in finding out the cause. At least she is content and happy!

My best friend just went thru this. She has no dairy and no soy. Basically she eats nothing. She is so strict and his diapers are better now. I would take this to the extreme because even if they are happy it could be doing some damage to their little bodies. Also my friend's doctor told her it takes 3-4 weeks to see resluts.

M.-
This happened to my little one when he was 3 months old, also (bright red blood in his stool; mostly specs, but sometimes as large as a grain of rice). He is currently 10 months old, thriving, and doing well. We have discovered at this point that it was due to allergies. Not only did I cut out dairy, but soy as well (there is a high incidence of children that are allergic to milk are also allergic to soy). Also high on the potential allergens list is egg, wheat, fish/shellfish, pine nuts, and tree nuts. I cut out everything in my diet (as he is still breastfed), and he did much better. We have him followed by a gastroenterologist to keep an eye on it. We are slowly adding some of the potential allergens to his diet and mine to rule out what specifically he is allergic to. So, needless to say, it's been difficult from a 'what to eat' perspective, but well worth it to figure out what's going on. And, he was/is always happy and wonderful, as well. It is not always indicitave if they are happy; they could still have allergies. I hope this helps a little, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

My son is 5 so it's been a while since he was that age, but he had blood in his stool for about 2 months. We did a stool sample and eventually did some type of gastro scan where he had to lay still on a machine for a long time. In the end there was nothing wrong and the problem went away. I'll never know...
