Breastfeeding & Periods

I have an 8 mo. old who I have been exclusively nursing since birth (well, he's on baby food now too, but other than that has strictly nursed). I got my period at 7 months post-partum, probably b/c he was beginning to eat more solids and I had dropped a feeding per day. However, based on my pre-baby schedule, I'm over a week late. I know my hormones are probably out of balance since I'm still nursing, but I was wondering how normal this is. I have a pregnancy test in my bathroom cabinet, but I don't want to take it. I do have my annual exam next week so I'll ask my dr., I was just wondering if anyone else had something similar happen. I guess I assumed my period was back for good. I also had some post-partum thyroid issues, but my last 2 blood tests were normal. I hope that problem isn't revisiting me and wreaking havoc on my hormones. Oh, the joys of womanhood!

What can I do next?

UGH! I hated this with my son. I had started my period again when he was 4 mths and it sucked. With the girls, I did not start like that, and none of my friends started till they were done, or almost done with bfeeding. You being late could be that you are nursing and your hormones do tend to go nuts. I hope this helps. keep us updated. Good luck!

My cycle started out about 7-8 days longer than it had been pre-pregnancy and then slowly got shorter as I nursed less. I got my period exactly 6 months post-partum. I think it's very normal to have delayed ovulation and an extended cycle with all of the hormones you have from nursing.

Totally normal. I didn't get a period myself until the 8th month. I hadn't gotten to breastfeed my son as long so I was starting to wonder why I didn't get a period, and if I should be worried about it (although I have an IUD for birth control so I wasn't too worried about pregnancy). Then I suddenly got one, but it was light. The next month - nothing. Then, at month 10, I had a normal period and again at 11. I expect it will waver a little until my daughter weans and then regulate out. If you are worried about another pregnancy, then take the test to alleviate your mind - remember that stress can affect your period too! But it IS normal to have some irregularity at first.

For me, my periods were wacky for several months after they started back up. I too was b'feeding, and my first period was about 6-7 mo PP as well.

i breastfed both of my children exclusively for 13 and 14 months. i didn't get my period until i had finished. my second child is now 17 months and my periods still aren't regular. I spot and they just come and last as long as they feel like it. I know it takes time to get back on schedule, so I'm waiting it out. I did take pregnancy test just to make sure because the birth control was making me nausious also. I'm sure you're fine, but it does take time for your body to adjust again.
