We relied on Lactational Amenhorrea for six months (more info: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/normal/fertility.html) then I had a Mirena IUD put in. I'm very happy withit, and I've had no problems with my milk supply.

Congratulations on your baby! I am nursing my beautiful 4 month old daughter. My dr. put me on a "safe bc pill" at my 6 week check up (at my request). My milk supply began deteriorating very quickly. Even though my dr. told me that the bc pill probably wasn't the reason, I quit and feel so blessed that my supply came back. We just use condoms now. I just can't do the IUD... they freak me out. Good luck with your decision!

Mini-pill. I used it with both kids and breastfed as well for 14 months. But you should take this pill at the same time every day.

Congrats!!! Mirena...worry free birth control, and very little side effect. It works for me. Talk to your doctor. Good luck with the breastfeeding.

Condoms. It is the easiest and safest for you and the baby. I have heard to many stories of pregnancy while on the pill and too many stories with breastmilk drying out while on the pill. Good luck and I am sure everything will work out fine.

When I was breastfeeding I took the depo-prevara shots. This was many years ago. It is possible there is some much better birthcontrol out there now. My sex drive did plummet but I also was a mommy of 4 kids and exhausted. Good luck!

Jolivette....it's the safe BF pill.
I take it now and took it while nursing my daughter and had no problems. You also have lighter shorter periods but it can make you have sore breasts like it did to me which does go away with time.
You can also do the Mirena or the Depo shot if you prefer a method other than the pill.

I have the Mirena IUD and love it! I would reccomend it becuase as a nursing mom with an infant do you think you can remember to take apill every day? I knew I could not, so I went with the Mirena. It makes your cycles lighter and almost non-existent! Plus there is no weight gain side effects. Also, it works for 5 years! If you want to have another baby before then , you simply go to your doctor to have it removed. I had the Mirena after my daughter, who is now almost 5, and then had it removed to get pregnant with my son, and I was pregnant within 3 months of removing it. Ask your OB about Mirena!

Hi! I've been on Errin (Micronor) since my 6th child and I breast fed him til 2 1/2 y/o. Then I decided to have more kids so I stopped them, nursed and took them, stopped again, used them and I am still nursing #8 but working on weaning him since he is now 2 1/2 y/o. I love those pills, no side effects as they are progestin only, and if you want to have more kids you can start trying as soon as you stop them. My milk supply has always been great and there is no extra weight gain either. Congrats! God bless!

Your doctor can give you something called the mini-pill; it won't affect your ability to nurse nor will it hurt the baby. Congrats on the new baby!

Wow-congrats on even wanting to have sex that soon after birthing. (that's a joke) We used condoms (and still do).

Your ob/gyn should have asked you at your 6 wk check up. Progestin only pills are safe to use you just have to be really diligent on taking it.

Condoms. I'm paranoid and worried that someday they will find out the "safe" pills weren't. Plus we want our kids to only be a couple years apart so getting on and off the pill in a short period didn't seem like a good idea.

Sometimes the hormones in birthcontrol can decrease your milk supply so if you are serious about breastfeeding try an IUD. I had the paraguard (copper) IUD inserted when my daughter was 2mo old. it does cause heavier periods for a few months but now I am starting to level out (after 8 months). I prefer it because you never have to worry about missing the pill or getting the condom on. And, when you are ready they just pull it out! I had no problem with my breast milk either! it is great.

My ob prescribed me Errin, a progesterone only pill, for while I'm nursing. Congrats on working through breastfeeding trouble and good luck!

I took the mini-pill with my first two. With my first, after about 4 months, a doctor said I could now switch to the regular pill since my milk was established. So I switched and my son got thrush and it was a horrible fiasco. So I switched back to the mini-pill and never had a problem. With my third, we just used contraceptive foam. And just FYI, I had a really gassy baby, and I wasn't eating all the gassy-food offenders, so I got acidofilus for babies (at a natural food store) mine was called Babydofilus and it took the gas away. It is a powder that they can just eat or mix it with breastmilk. Mine just like to eat it!

I breastfed both of my girls (almost 4 and just turned 2) until they were 15 months old. After my second, I was determined to be on birth control, but I am notorious for forgetting to take pills! Well, my doctor and a friend of mine suggested the Mirena IUD so I got that put in. I really highly recommend it. Nothing to worry about for up to five years and you can get pregnant right away if and when you decide to have it removed. PS I forgot to mention that I had absolutly no period while I had the IUD in! I tried the mini-pill after my first but you're supposed to take it at the same time every day (with only about 30 min leway, eash)! You're also supposed to adjust the dose after you start skipping feedings and introducing solids...I didn't want the hassle again...and really didn't do well the first time:).
