i stopped breastfeeding my little one at around 11 months, she is now 16 months. i still feel like i make milk sometimes. The milk never comes out but i get that weird sensation. It doesnt hurt it just feels strange. How long does this feeling last and i wonder if im actually making milk or if its just my hormones. it happens when im thinking of my daughter and when im away from her (like at work or stuck in traffic)

What can I do next?

I stopped breastfeeding my twins in January, and that October when I got pregnant with my daughter I was still making milk. So, I've been making milk for about 3.5 years now!

Great question, I can't wait to hear the answers... my son is 21 months old and I only nursed until he was about 7 months, but I swear I still feel the let down!

You will forever be making milk. Once you wean, it will not be at that level of production, but it will be a minimal baseline that will allow your body to quickly re-lactate to a point where you could nourish a child again. It's the awesomeness that is being a child bearing female.

I think it can last up to a year or longer with the feeling of actual milk. I had that let down feeling for a long time after my kids. It will go away as far as the let down feeling but it can still be there years and years later.

Some people can make milk forever and all their breasts would need to do it would be a little nipple stimulation. Most of us dry up.

I breastfed until my daughter was 3 (one year ago) and can still express a little fluid (seems more oily than milk-like) if I press near the nipple, but don't have that strange sensation that you describe anymore. When I asked my GYN if I should be concerned, she assured me that this is common and that I may notice this for years (!) to come. The body is so interesting!!
