Breastfed Baby Won't Take Bottle - La Porte,TX

My 6 month old son has been taking a bottle for me on weekends and at the babysitter once a week for the past 2-3 months. He now has been refusing the bottle from everyone for 2 weeks. We are not aware of anything that has changed that would make him no longer want a bottle. I tried having the babysitter give him cereal (mixed with breastmilk) instead of a bottle and he refuses that as well. Does anyone have suggestions on how to get him to take a bottle again. I plan on still breastfeeding for a few more months but want to be able to give him a bottle as well. I just started him on cereal and am introducing baby food and he eats good for me at home but still wants to nurse after eating. I don't want to let him cry it out but am not sure what to do.

What can I do next?

Maybe it's time to introduce the sippy cup. There is a great one that I started my son on when he was 6 months old. It's called the Nuk learner cup. They are about 6 dollars at walmart. They have a soft spout shaped into the sippy cup spout. I have found that the flow of these are much slower then the Nuby soft spouts. They have handles for them to learn to hold or they can be removed to just hold the bottle. Absolutely love them!!! This is a link that I found online of them. They come in red, blue and green.

Since he's getting older, he may need a nipple with a faster flow now.

Oh boy I went through this! I bought every bottle out there and finally my daughter took to the Playtex Nurser- with the drop in sleeve. Also everyone said that she would never take a bottle from me but she did just fine. Keep offering it to him before breast feeding.
Good Luck!

you could try to change to a faster flow nipple or just move him straight to a sippy cup.

Ditch the bottle and go to a sippy cup.

Smart boy! Sounds like his taste buds are developing and he's realized that BM tastes sooo much better and is more comforting when it comes from Mamma. Just keep offering him both bottle and solids.

Is he still drinking directly from being breast fed. If not he might be having some tummy troubles. Not eating is a sign of something else. If he is just refusing the bottle let him have a step back and then re introduce it again in about four days. Good luck.

Cereal and baby food are not a replacement for breastmilk, so it's normal that he wants to nurse afterward. In fact, I always nursed mine a little before solids to make sure they didn't fill up on solids. The amount of baby food a child ingests has NOWHERE NEAR the nutrition and calories that the amount of breastmilk they'll drink has. So you want to make sure he is getting plenty of BM.

About the bottle....please don't make him cry it out. This is not a battle of wills that your baby will understand! I can't give you advice, as my babies flat out refused the bottle, so I am not sure how to make your baby take it again. But breastmilk is the best thing for him. If he refuses to take a bottle don't replace the bottles with more babyfood or cereal. Breastmilk is all the actual nutrition he needs for several more months. Food is just for the experience right now.

I would put expressed breastmilk in a sippy cup and see if he'll take that.

Good luck. I know it's hard to be the sole source of baby's nutrition and it can be hard sometimes but so worth it.

My baby boy started doing that as well and I was so confused about it because he had always taken a bottle from two weeks old. Not all the time, but whenever I needed a break or at church etc. We found out it was an ear infection and that the bottle just caused a ton of pressure when he would try and take it. After treating those little ears he took a bottle just fine again. So you might want to try getting him checked and make sure they do a tympanogram(not sure if I spelled that right!)because that will measure the fluid in his ears. When my son had a bunch of fluid in his ears the doctor had looked in his ears the a couple days before and said they looked fine, I only found out about his ears because he spiked a fever but his ears had been bothering him for a while. Other than that you might want to try different bottle and nipple types. I ended up changing to Dr. Browns fast flow for my son and he loved them and had no problem with bottles once I changed over to them. Hope that helps and good luck!

mine quit at 4 months. 2 ideas... breastflow bottles from the 1st years are the closest bottle to breastfeeding. they actually have to work to get the milk out, just like breastfeeding. 2nd, try a sippy cup. sounds crazy, but my daughter started a sippy at 4 months. good luck!

Have you changed the flow of the nipple lately? If so, it might affect him. If not, it might be too hard to suck, too slow. I don't know. But, since he's taken the bottle before, I wouldn't worry too much. He knows how and if he truly gets hungry, he'll eat. I know you hate to put his sitter through that tantrum though. I wish I had more advice for you. But, check the nipple flow. Also, more than once, as a mother then as a sitter - if you're using a new nipple - sometimes they are closed up and have no hole. Check that too.

My daughter did this.. dislike of bottle appeared 'overnight'.... Since he is now bigger and sucking stronger... try a faster flow nipple. That fixed her dislike immediately.
