Breast Pump

I am interested in purchasing a breast pump and I wanted to get the opinion of other moms on pumps that work well without costing too much money. I don't work outside of home so I main need is to help build a stronger supply when my daughter comes and pump enough so I can get out of the house and leave a bottle occasionally. I am really curious to know about hand pumps and how well they work! Please inform me on what (hand)pump you have used and the pros and cons regarding this pump. Are pumps expensive to rent? Cost?

Thank you for you help!

I recommend the AVENT ISIS breast pump. It is inexpensive and the manual hand held pump is easy to squeeze and can be used with only one hand. It has a silicone insert with petal massagers that stimulate letdown so you can fill up a bottle very fast! I LOVE this pump and have used it with my last 3 children. With my first baby, I used a pump the required two hands to use and made my breast sore (I can't remember the brand). I had such a hard time getting the milk to letdown that I gave up. Then I read and article about women who liked the AVENT ISIS better than their electric pumps so I tried it with my second child and loved it! Good luck!

Hi B.. I breast fed my second baby for 10 months and worked full time. First I tried a had pump that I got at target but my milk supply was so much ( my co-workers called me a cow) that my hands were killing me before I could get all the milk out (I pumped about 22oz in my 9 hours away from home). Then I satrted renting a Medela double pump and was finished in about 7 min with both breasts. It was $30 month and if I was going to have another baby I would use the same one again!
Also, to build up a supply I would let the baby use me as a pacifier about an hour after a feeding then after a few times of that I would pump when an hour had passed instead of letting him use me as a pacifier.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
:) C.

hi,
most hospitals will rent a pump to you and I believe they run about $60/month. I know my cousin is renting one right now. If you don't need one for everyday then definitely I think the single medela pump is probably good. I used their electric double for both my kids and it has been lent out various times, so definitely worth the money.

Remember it is usually not recommended to start pumping until the baby is about six to eight weeks old. Then I just started pumping every night just before going to bed. This should give plenty of milk for that occasional use.

good luck...and congratulations! (a little part of me always gets babylust when I hear of a baby girl, since I have two boys :)

To build a strong supply breastfeed on demand, at least every two hours. Pumping cannot create the demand an infant can. As far as pumps, I recommend Medela's manual pump. I paid $30 but found the same one at Target for my cousin for only $10. It is very comfortable, gentle and I'm able to get more out over an electric. For my first baby I had Evenflo's electric pump. The suction was awful and painful. I couldn't get very much milk out. I only used it a few times and by the time my second baby came it wasn't working at all.

I use the Medela Pump In Style and LOVE it! I have used other less expensive pumps and they broke or didnt work as well. I borrowed my sister-in-law's when my son was born and ended up buying my own. I used it with my son and now my daughter. it is well worth the money! Invest, its worth it!! You can look on ebay. You can find them very inexpensive!
Good Luck!

I had my second child 5 weeks ago, and i have to return to work in 3 weeks. To get ready, my lactation consultant, and my doctor both recommended pumping after my son eats, but at least 2 hours between pumping/feeding. They had me start in the hospital. I've been pumping at night right before bed, and sometimes after his first morning feeding... (when i'm feeling really full) and I have a freezer full of milk ready.

I have to say that the Medela pumps are the best. I tried evenflo, and avent. Those were both a waste of money. You get what you pay for, and they were cheap. If you tell them you want to pump when you are in the hospital, they will give you a medela universal attachment kit, which includes a hand pump - no cost, and it is a great pump ( the rest of the kit is for the rental pumps). I bought a pump-in-style with my first baby, and it still works great. If you can afford the $300 for it, its worth it, otherwise get the medela hand pump.

Don't rent a pump unless you need the hospital grade pump.It a super strong pump and meant more for moms who can't breastfeed the babies due to illness, but need to keep up the milk flow.

I had no luck with manual pumps and finally gave in and purchased the Medela Pump In Style. It was pricey, but you may be able to find one to rent. It helped me to build my supply from about one ounce per session to nearly 8 ounces! I would talk to your hospital about rentals. Good luck!
