Breast Fed Baby Rarely Goes #2

Hey mommas! My almost 4 month old son only goes #2 every 4-7 days! He is exclusivly breastfed and used to go every day until he turned 3 months old. Ever since he rarely goes. He doesn't seem uncomfortable or cranky at all. He has regular wet diapers, and passes gas every day several times. My first child has gone every single day from birth until now, so I guess this just worries me! The doctor told me some breastfed babies only go every 7-10 days because they digest everything they eat so well. I am just curious if there are other little ones out there that are like my son, who don't go very often? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

don't woory. He is not constipated. You would know if he was. My first daughter would go once a week.My second daughter was the same way. My second daughter went 12 days one time.

Hi--

My daughter went through this at around 2 months. At one point she went 10 days with no dirty diaper. We took her to a pediatric GI doctor who indicated that as long as she is not exhibiting any other symptoms (fussiness, distended tummy, etc.), it is fine. He said the record among his patients was 16 days. My daughter was going 1-2 times a week, and that went on for a couple of months. She now goes once every 1-2 days. As long as everything else is fine, there is no need to worry!

I wouldn't worry about it. As long as he seems comfortable and not in any pain....it's not unusual. Your breastmilk is just giving him all the nutirents he needs and very little needs to come out as waste. :)

Hi J.,

I am surprised your doctor would make that statement. A baby's stomach lining isn't even fully developed until age one (which is why it is important not to feed babies table food). Something you are eating is causing his constipation. You should be eating primarily "whole" (unprocessed) foods and stay away from high-allergen foods like dairy, wheat, corn, eggs and soy. You can try eliminating all of these for a week and then adding them back in one at a time (one new food every two days) and see if you can identify the culprit.

Good luck! :)

Totally normal. My doctor said that some breastfed babies go 8 times a day and others go every 8 days. My boys were in the first group and my daughter was in the 2nd. And now, as an adult, like me, she only goes every other day! It was/ is totally normal for her/ me. Nothing to worry about.

My boys (I have 3) all went through the same thing. It's completely normal!! One of my boys only went once a week. And you'll come to a point when they start to go everyday again. But if you're worried at all they can have some Gerber prune juice mixed with water in a sippy cup. That will help tons!

Sounds pretty normal :) We exclusively breastfeed and my daughter was a poop-meister the first 3 to 4 months then out of no where she stopped. We worried but our pediatrician said it was normal, so long as she didn't seem bloated or fussy. He said if we were really worried (which lets face it, no matter if the doctor says it's normal, you still think they need to poop pronto) we could give her a little white grape juice, no more than 2 oz and maybe water it down a bit, just to help get things moving. Now we now it was just her digestive system maturing and soaking up all the food she could get. She doesn't have a dirty diaper every day anymore, but her dad is pretty good at foretelling when she's ready to (about every 3 to 4 days). I'm sure your lil' man is on a normal track, enjoy the less poopy days ahead!

I too had that problem with my third baby. My first two went at least once a day, every day. It freaked me out when my baby only went once a week! My doctor said it was normal and a breastfed baby could wait up to 16 days! As she got older she started going more often, but she still seems to have trouble more than my others do. Just make sure your baby is eating enough and once he /she can have water that helps. I have to give my little girl (15 months) prunes every few weeks still to help her. As long as the baby is not struggling it should be ok....I was always still worried though.

Hi J.,

This happened with my second child too. It is nothing to worry about. You will have plenty of poop to deal with later when he starts the solid foods. Enjoy not having the poop around as much for now. My son went once every 5 or 6 days when he was an infant. My doctor told me the same thing yours did. Take care,

My son was like that around that age too, and he was exclusively breastfed. He'd go for 4-5 days without a poop but when he did finally go...watch out! That phase only lasted for a few months and once he started solids at 6 months he was back to going every day. Now at 1 yr he goes at least twice a day. Don't worry, totally normal!

My son (who is now 7)was the same way. He was exclusively breastfed and only went #2 once per week until he started solids. As long as he is having wet diapers and is growing, he is doing fine.

My first baby went everyday and still does and he is five. My daughter only went every 4-6 days-if that. She is still prone to constipation. They are all different and your doctor is right that some babies that are breastfed do not go for over a week sometimes, but when they do, watch out:)

My Ped told me that around 3-5 months they go through a massive growth spurt and utilize just about everything they eat. It's normal to have a bm only a couple times a week for awhile but it will pass. My son did the same thing. If he gets uncomfortable just give him little sips of good water throughout the day. Make sure you are getting a healthy intake of fluid and you might want to eat a bunch of apples.

The same exact thing happened to my son when he was a baby. I talked to a pediatric nurse about it and she said that breast milk is so effecient that he was using everything to grow that he would normally poop out. He probably went two weeks without pooping and then finally did. It really worried me at the time but apparently this is common for breast fed babies.

As a massage therapist, I would do clockwise massage on his belly. Don't do it too much, you might get the opposite result!

My babies have all been like that. Don't stress about it until you start solids and then he only goes every 4-5 days... that isn't quite enough. But breastmilk is amazing so live it up--- fewer stinky diapers... :)

Hello. My son is now 7 months old and is exclusivly breast fed. He only poops about every 4 days and has always been that way. My doctor told me the same thing that yours did. Its actually nice because I always kind of know when he will be pooping.

My second one was like this and I was very worried too. It wasn't until my third that I realized maybe the second wasn't getting all the fatty hind milk. So maybe try keeping your son on the first breast a bit longer. I was told with my second no more than 10 min on the first breast but then realized she wasn't getting the hind milk and she was just a slow eater. My third only ate from one breast at a feeding & was very plump & pooped every day, at least once. As for your son I wouldn't worry too much; he's using all he's getting. My second to this day doesn't go #2 each day & she's still thriving.

My baby did the same thing and when she was being breastfed. I stopped breastfeeding after about 2 months (she is now 8 months) and she did not go #2 but she had the most horrible gas ever!!! One day we were in church and she passed gas and me and my husband just looked at each other with this grossed out look on our faces. When I asked the doc, she said that because she is digesting everything in the breastmilk, there was nothing left to come out. So, just use your mommy intuition.

BM is broken down so well by the system, it is completely normal to go this rarely. My baby girl went once every 7-10 days from 3mo-6.5mo until we introduced baby food =)
4 different GI Drs told us this was "normal" so it isnt a problem at all like some people stated in their responses.
Keep up the bf'ing!! You are doing the best thing possible for your sweet baby!

I've had two little once a week poopers. No worries! Enjoy not having so many poopy diapers to change, because it will change once he gets going on solids! :)
