All these advice answers are awful. I was a thumb sucker well into my teen years. Of course I didn't walk around outside of my home like that! It is self soothing. There is nothing better than a child that can self soothe. The first time I saw my daughter suck her thumb I was so relieved that she could calm herself any time she need to. Think, she can do that if you can't be there. You don't need help, you need to understand where she is coming from. All you need to do is to help her understand that she needs to do it at home or in private so the kids at school don't mock her. If I had a rough day at school I would go to the bathroom for a suck break. Some adults take a cigarette break, well I took a suck break. Let her keep calming herself, it will all work out. Oh, and I have beautiful straight teeth that never needed any work! I still remember when my mom tried to get me to stop (i was 4). She put that stuff on it that tastes bad. I still remember that taste! She says now that she regreted doing that to me and now she understands and apologized for that.

put something on her thumb that she doesn't like. I had a problem when my 3 year old starting biting people. It became so bad that i put hot sauce on my arm and when he bit me he got a taste of it. It sounds cruel, but he is 7 now and never bit anyone again.

This is so hard. I once got advise from a doctor that said they will grow out of it. Yes my daughter did at about 7 years old. She would do it while she was sleeping.. Nothing really worked and she needs work on her teeth but my twins also need some work on their teeth and they never sucked their thumbs.

Is she bored or tired?? Maybe shes seen other kids in school doing it. This might be a a soother. When you see her do it maybe distract her with something rather than trying to make a big deal about it. She knows its getting your attention.

Go the the pharmacy and ask for Thum. It looks like oily nail polish, but tastes nasty. It worked for my son to stop biting on his fingertips.

I wrapped my son's thumb in medical gauze. Even though he would slide it off at night to suck his thumb, it worked for the day, and he only does it now to get to sleep.

When my oldest daughter was 4, we were going to a family wedding. All of the gals were going to the salon to get their nails done. My daughter wanted hers done, too.
I told her that we could paint her toes, but not her hands, because the polish would make her sick if she sucked her thumb.
She swore she would not suck her thumb if I ler her paint her nails, so I agreed. That was the last time she ever sucked her thumb! It worked like a charm! Give it a shot.
