Breaking Away from the "Bottle"

I need some ideas on how to break my son who is 14 months old from his bottle. During the day he drinks everything (except milk) from a sippy cup. He will not drink milk from a sippy cup though. Not sure why but I understand that a lot of kids are like that. Anyways... He takes the bottle to go to sleep at night & maybe for a nap during the day & that's it. Seems to be like a security item for him, but I want to start weening him from that ritual.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

No more bottles :)
It's kinda sad because he's now on his way to being a "big boy"

Start by not giving it to him at nap time.....then start by not alway giving it to him at bedtime....."time" being the word here....go slow so the change will come to him.

Hi Becky. My son (almost 5) was so much easier to ween than my daughter (22 mo.). She is offically off of the botttle now; which took a good month. She did however start drinking less milk. Now she only drinks it in the morning and before bed. I switched her to the Nuby sippy cups. They have a silicone top which made her drink the milk from it easier than the ordinary sippy cup. Like I said my son went straight from the bottle to a Gerber sippy cup. I used the Playtex Ventaire wide bottles, and using the Nuby cups were the best choice for us. I hope that helps. I bought them at Babies R Us.

As far as a job goes, hang in there, something will come up. I am a school teacher, turned stay at home mom ever since my daughter was born. I too wanted something part time so I went with a direct sales company (Tastefully Simple). Maybe try a direct sales company that you are interested in? You can set your own hours, and work as little or as much as you want. There are so many to choose from. Good luck!

Hi Becky,

What I did for my son was this...Start giving him the bottle in another room. Then in his room, read books instead of the bottle. This still gives you cuddle time. In a few days, offer him a sippy cup of milk (in the other room) and hold it like you were giving him a bottle. My son was easy to transfer to the cup because I held it like a bottle at first. I started reading books to him before bed and he loved it, which made him forget about the bottle. Hope this helps.

Can you start with giving him a sippy cup instead of the bottle with the same contents?

I'm trying to do the same thing right now. Lucky for us, our son seems to be weaning himself from the bottle.

Hi Becky,
I switched to a sippy cup at night--you could still warm the milk up a little of that's how he likes it. THEN I switched to a sippy and a snack before bedtime (while watching Sprout or something). Pretty soon he got used to his bath, snack, show, bedtime routine. My son didn't miss a beat when I quit his "bubbies" and gave him a sippy so I guess I was lucky. And I think I thought it would be a bigger problem than it actually was. I just did it cold turkey O. night and he was fine. Good luck!

Try switching to a sippy cup. I recommend the Nuby because their sippy tops are sort of shaped like nipples. Wait about a week and then if he is getting milk, slowly start to water it down as a method to switch over to water. (Or you could switch to the water first.) I found that once they were switched to water it was easier to cut back how much they were drinking. The water seemed to take care of the thirst faster with less. Plus it didn't have the flavor they were looking for.

Anyhow, I hope this helps. Good luck with your little guy.

PS. Along the work at home line... I read about a site in Parents or Parenting magazine. I don't remember which. I haven't looked into it yet but thought I would pass along the information. It is called Mom Corps (momcorps.com). Hope this helps.

I switched to the sippy cup for a while also. It seemed to be a big help. I started with milk and then water until i weaned them.
