My 18 mos old won't eat much either. I still have to give her baby food. But she will eat these earth's best fruit bars. They are very much like small nutrigrain bars. She will also eat little bits of chicken and cheese (plus cereal and crackers), but that's it other than baby food. I wish she would eat all of the things people are suggesting below!

My ped. said he has a son who ate nothing but babyfood until he was 2 y/o. So supplementing with a little babyfood here and there may help you.

None of my 4 kids are breakfast eaters, I'm really not either! But we all love our smoothies in the morning....soy milk/banana/frozen strawberries/honey for sweetness/scoop of protein powder/scoop of flaxseed powder/yogurt! My kids also will eat maple/brown suger oatmeal when it's cold out. Hope that helps :)

I would suggest you allow her to get really hungry before trying to feed her. My 4th son (15 months old) is pretty picky. But...he will eat just about ANYTHING when I let him get hungry. I found that he wasn't too interested in eating right after waking up in the morning, so I wait until after I get his big brothers off to school before we have breakfast. One thing he LOVES to eat is Coaches Oats (from costco) that I cook with dehydrated blueberries (also from Costco) and then sprinkle with a teaspoon of flaxseed meal, a big glob of butter and a sprinkle of brown sugar. I stir it all together and then thin it down a little with whole milk. He DEVOURS this when he's hungry....not so much when he's not. You might also try a good cereal bar (Fresh and Easy and Trader Joe's makes a good one that doesn't have High Fructose Corn Syrup), natural peanut butter on whole wheat toast, cottage cheese with diced peaches, whole milk yougurt sprinkled with flaxseed meal and optional whole grain cereal like Cheerios, cheesy toast (a piece of bread with a slice of cheese melted on top under the broiler), french toast made with whole grain bread - cut into small bites, you're only limited by your imagination! :-) You said she won't take eggs, but maybe try making scrambled eggs with butter and melted cheese. My kids liked things better when I seasoned them up with some good 'ol S&P and maybe a sprinkle of garlic or onion powder. You can also check out a couple of books that I LOVE and use(d) with all my boys - "Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron, and "Whole Foods for the Whole Family" by L.L.L. They are CHOCK FULL of great ideas on how to feed your baby and what to feed your baby! Don't give up offering her things that she currently refuses. It can take many, many times before a kid decides to eat something. My baby wouldn't eat eggs for the longest time, but now he loves them. Don't stress too much about it...she's going to be fine! And remember that kids WILL NOT let themselves starve - it just won't happen! Good luck!

Hi P.,
First let me reassure you: most babies will, eventually, eat when they get hungry :)

Second, I don't know what it is about the idea of, "dipping sauce." I don't know how it got started in our home; and this started when our first was very young; but our boys will eat almost anything if there is some kind of "dipping sauce" involved.

Anything from yogurt, gravy, soy sauce, mustard, salad dressing, or even actual 'dip,' whatever: if the plate has a "dipping sauce" on it, they will at least eat *something.* I have no idea if this would work for anyone else: just my weird family, lol!

Good luck!

You know, anything can be breakfast... if she doesn't like cereal, how about rice? Yogurt? You can bake "breakfast cookies". Will she eat hot cereal? Like oatmeal? (my daughter loves oatmeal and it's a snap to make in the MW)
Toast with butter or a sandwich? Fruit Smoothie?
Or just serve some warm leftovers from dinner. Just because it isn't breakfast fare, doesn't mean she can't eat it as the first meal of the day.
Ideally you will find something that your family can agree on for breakfast so you don't become a short order cook.

I feel your pain. I have three kids, and none of them are particular fans of breakfast foods. What has helped me is to realize that any food can be breakfast. My kids often eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for breakfast. They have had mac & cheese, Chicken Noodle Soup, quesadillas and other non-traditional breakfast foods. They also love Nancy's Quiche Florentine. Any nutritious food that you would successfully feed her at any other time of the day can be breakfast. If you can get some protein in her in the morning, it will help. C'mon, be a rule breaker! It will save you lots of aggravation. Good luck!

Sometimes kids just are not breakfast people (my oldest now 15 has never eaten breakfast food) We did yogurts, bananas & milk, bagels, toast/cinnamon/sugar... I would just find things she likes & eats good & give it to her even if it;s not considered a breakfast food.. eventually when she can talk more she will let you know things she likes.. Also some kids just not hungry when first wake up it takes sometimes 15min or so before they want to eat.. good luck

I'm sure you've heard it before, but your daughter won't starve herself. Even the most stubborn kid, will eat when hungry. With that said, have you noticed of the foods that your daughter won't eat, or eat much of, are similar in texture? I can't remember what foods they say to stay away from for 1 year olds. Try foods of all differnt textures...yougurt, cottage cheese, big people oatmeal, mashed potatos, very soft peas, untoasted bagel (with no topping), jello, shredded cheese. Try different flavors too. You may be surprised and she'll like what you least expect her to like. My youngest son (2 yrs old) eats things that surprise the heck out of me. Make a special trip to the grocery store at a time when you're not shopping for the whole family, and look at all the food and for each item ask yourself if it's something you could give your daughter to try. Think outside the box. You could also call a day care center that serves meals and ask them what they serve the 1 yr olds for some ideas. Also, it may take 10 trys of giving your daughter the same food before she begins to like it. It's frustrating, I know. This too shall pass and before you know it, you'll be on to the next phase. :-) Good luck.

My girl is a good little eater, so I really feel for you. My girl's FAV breakfast is yogurt and granola. Also scrambled eggs and avocados. Fruits are always a hit too. I like making homemade healthy muffins. She digs those. You can make a big batch on weekend and then freeze them till you need them
I guess that's all I can think of right now for a 1 yr old. Good luck!

Breakfast for my daughter was similar - she didn't like any normal breakfast foods. I ended up giving her what she liked. As long as she got the nutrition that is all I cared about.

Yogurt, bananas, strawberries, bread (plain), frozen french toast(if I heated it she wouldn't eat it), goldfish, crackers. I had the most success w/yogurt and the fruit. To this day, she still eats fresh strawberries every morning.

Good luck.

Anything healthy will do... don't be stuck on "breakfast food" if she wants mac and cheese and green beans give it to her! Sometimes my 16 mos old eats yogurt (we do yo baby organic for the organic factor and whole milk factor) for lunch or dinner instead of "breakfast". I have 3 kids and noticed that sometimes they get stuck on certain foods for a long time-weeks sometimes- and this is ok! I was told a long time ago that you look at a toddler's diet over the course of a month rather than day-their body will get whatever it needs from the healthy choices you offer. Also, since my 16 mos old still nurses (2-3 times a day) he is not crazy about cow's milk yet so I trick him by mixing it w/ the yogurt about half/half and add cereal-chex, plain cheerios, or rice krispies seem to go over well. The important thing here is to keep offering healthy choices even if one day she snubs them, the next day she may not-Have you ever heard that it takes on avg about 13 tries before they decide they like some foods? Smoothies are another good alternative-using no sugar but fruits, veggies (a carrot always goes in ours), plain full fat organic yogurt (for your daughter's age). If you use frozen fruit then you don't have to add ice! You can also add milk if you want. You know, even my kids love pizza for breakfast-cold pizza is not a bad breakfast -esp if you can sneak in a banana along side!

Does it *have* to be "breakfast" food? lunch & dinner foods are just as nutritious. If she wants to eat green beans and bread for breakfast, FINE! If she wants to wait a while before eating breakfast, that's fine too - I haven't eaten my breakfast yet, I need to wait at least an hour before eating and it seems my son is the same way :(
Dipping sauce is great - maybe not at one yr old but I bet soon she'll be eating better if she can dip things - ie, fruit or toast strips into yogurt, pancake/wffle strips into syrup (and yogurt), french fries (which is not so different from hash browns really) into ketchup, etc.

I can't say I have the same problem, my daughter loves breakfast. I love all the below answers. I look forward to trying a few. My daughter also loves waffles with applesauce spread across the top. I try not to give her syrup. I also use PB&J on top. Try cream of wheat, you can mix anything with it. Literally. I also buy canned fruit with syrup to put in oatmeal, so you don't have to add milk. You can also pour them over pancakes or waffles. The syrup gets soaked up. Try sausage gravy with crumbled biscuits.

Carnation Instant Breakfast shake? Cinnamon toast? Fruit is a great breakfast.
When my son started wanting crackers & pepperoni & cheese for breakfast, I had to let go of my idea of "breakfast"! There are much worse things out there!

I read the other responses which are all recommendations I would make as well. My one year old loves the Nutri Grain breakfast bars, they are soft and easy to eat. Also try french toast sticks, easy and mircrowavable, fruit and yogurt are always good and both my boys eat that a lot for breakfast. Maybe also cream of wheat if your daughter doesn't like oatmeal or cold cereal, or just dry cheerios.

My son loves cottage cheese, yogurt, oranges (although he just sucks the juice out), bananas, peaches, pears, string cheese, toast with banana or jelly spread on it, sliced turkey (I buy oven baked from deli). He likes nutri-grain bars, but it's kind of off and on.

Regular toast , bagels , croissant , english muffins. Also fruits like a banana can be quite filling. Will she drink a smoothie? What about a cereal bar? Yogurts? Crepes?

Hope this helps a little
